Chapter 6 is all based the strengthening of friendship between the characters of Caitlin and Bill and of Old bill and Billy. In the section Comfort Bill talks about how he hated school and didn’t have any friends. The repetition of the negative quotes in the section emphasises how Billy did not belong in his old environment. “I never talked to girls, I hardly talked to anyone. Sure, I answered questions from teachers and occasionally I’d talk to some guys I’d know for years. But I didn’t have any friends”. This links back to the harsh and abusive environment Billy grew up in, as stated in previous chapters.…

The Schoolteacher's Guest tells the story of Ines, a retired schoolteacher who runs the first hotel in the town, Agua Santa. Her son had previously been killed and his murderer had fled. Years later the murderer returns. Ines kills him and confesses to her best friend Riad Halabi. They bury the body and the whole community help to keep it a secret. It is set in Latin America. The town is described as being quiet, uneventful and cut off from the mainstream of activity; an 'insignificant backwater'. The community is depicted as being friendly, characters 'waving, as usual.' The climate is hot as 'the hour of the mosquitoes' is mentioned in the story and mosquitoes are limited to warm climates. We also are told it is 'on the edge of the jungle.' The community in this story is very close and they look out for each other. People respect each other and 'secrets are kept by good neighbors.' How much respect you have in the community is not defined by how much money you have or how important your job is. In the story Ines is described as 'mightier than that of the priest, the doctor, or the police.' The structure of this story has a huge effect on how well the story achieves its presentation of the community and other parts in this story. The story starts with a shock but the opening becomes less distressing as the story is explained. Also the way the story moves around in time means the story has more of an impact. The way that the events are set out means at first the story is shocking but then The Schoolteacher's Guest, characters are shocked by the death but it does not seem overly significant. Ines was more concerned with 'calculating that it would take at least two days to wash out the stains and at least two more to rid the room of its odor.' Also the stories show how much 'authority' certain people have and whether this is affected by the expectations of society. The writer seemed to be focused on history and culture of theirsociety and also how females are…
AP Frank, also known as the “workhorse”, focuses more on the pressure bestowed by the overbearing parents of our generation instead of the pressure students provide themselves. AP Frank had to grapple with the horrifying parental pressure to succeed his whole life. His mother was the main source of pressure in his life with her need to control his life and carve out a path of where she thought AP Frank should be headed. “But the idea of her assigning his college course load, as she done throughout high school, mortified him. He couldn’t let her guilt him into fulfilling a path she had predetermined. (pg.12)” AP Frank’s mother never let her son choose who and what he wanted to be and set such high, almost impossible expectations that AP Frank spent his whole high school life pressured to desperately meet them. During his high school life, AP Frank was forced to take all AP classes every year by his mother and she expected him to ace them all. “At some point during the school year, his mother had indeed called up Dr. Marco, infuriated, demanding to know why there wasn’t an AP gym class so that AP Frank could have a perfect GPA of 5.0. (pg.13)” He was never really allowed to have a life. Even though Frank’s story is very crazy it is relatable. Many parents nowadays are so obsessed with their kid’s lives and success that it becomes the parent’s lives too. Because of the high expectations parents set for the…
