Bill Clinton’s memorial speech was straight forward and to the point. There were three central messages that stood out in the speech. One was we do not need violence to win. The second was one man’s words and his followers made a difference and changed America for the better. The Third was to repay the debt by being thankful and we have the ability to change America.
Repay the debt by being grateful for all the movement has changed. “The martyrs played it all for a dream, a dream, as John Lewis said, that millions have now actually lived.” America needs to think about all of the things that are no longer happening from the march and movement. There is no more lynching or beating for political beliefs anymore. King and his followers decreased violence over the color of one’s skin. All races have the same rights as one another. African Americans no longer have to ride in the back of the bus, have their own separate bathroom, or have their own drinking fountain.
Clinton said King “urged the victims of racial violence to meet white Americans with an outstretched hand, not a clenched fist, and, in so doing, to prove the redeeming power of unearned suffering.” Clinton mentions the four children that lives were took from the Birmingham bombing, the Ku Klux Klan murders, and the Mississippi lynching’s. The people had to be both realist and idealist through the violent time. Although the time was violent they stayed civil. Instead of violence they used protests, words and the march. This proved that you can win without the need of violence.
Clinton added in his speech that “Martin Luther King urged his crowd not to drink from the cup of bitterness but to reach across the racial divide because, he said, we cannot walk alone. Their destiny is tied up with our destiny. Their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.”
