I am writing about a famous African American professional basketball ball player named Bill Russell. Born in Monroe, Louisiana on February 12, 1934 as William Felton Russell. Mr.Russell was very educated, he attended the university of San Francisco. He was drafted in the NBA in 1956, by the St.Louis Hawks and was later trade to Boston Celtics. Bill Russell accomplished many things in his basket ball career and considerd the greatest defensive center to play In the NBA.

Bill Russell, born in Monroe, LA in 1934 had trouble growing up.West Monroe Louisiana was segregated and because of this Russell’s parents Charles and Katie Russell moved to Oakland California. Russell’s dad Charles had more work and there was a larger black community. Bill was always closer to his mom Katie when he was a child but she passed away when he was fifteen years old. He then later got looked up to his father calling him a “hero”. Upon entering his teen years, Bill attended McClymonds Highschool , where he struggled to develop his skills as a basketball player, however his coach George Powles saw raw talent and encouraged him to work on his fundamentals.

Reared in Oakland California, Russell attended the University of San Francisco. He led the university to two consecutive championship season from 1954 to 1956. Bill also played on the US Olympic Team in Melbourne Australia in 1956. He helped the US team win the gold medal. Early in his college years Bill displayed talent and skill that made him very sucessful.

In 1956 the Boston Celtics were seeking to get better in rebounding and defense. They traded Ed Macauley and Cliff Haggan to the St. Louis Hawks for the right to draft Bill Russell. Bill Russell went on to win eleven championships in his thirteen year career with the Boston Celtics, the most ever by a single athlete. He was named to the Hall of Fame in 1975 and also became a member of the NCAA Hall of Fame. Bill Russell retired as a

    In 1989, Shawn Kemp attended Concord High school, in Elkhart, Indiana. Kemps senior year in high school he was considered to be one of the top four to five players nationally. He led his team to the state championship finals. He finished third for the Mr. Basketball award. During senior year he signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball for the University of Kentucky. Shawn left the team November 1988, after being accused of pawning two gold chains that belonged to the head coach, Eddie Sutton’s son, Sean Sutton. Sean Sutton did not press charges, but Kemp decided to transfer to Trinity Valley Community College in Texas, but he did not play basketball for them. When Shawn Kemp was 19 years old he declared himself eligible for the 1989 NBA draft. The Seattle Supersonics drafted Kemp first round. Shawn was still young though and struggled to find his place in the NBA. He looked up to his former teammate Xavier McDaniel. Xavier mentored Shawn to help him find his place. Shawn Kemp, Nate McMillan, Ricky Pierce, and Gary Payton worked together and became very successful. During Shawns second season oh playing for the Sonics he picked up the name “Reignman,” meaning that he has power. In 1994 Shawn Kemp played for the US National Team in the FIBA World Championships in Toronto, and won a gold medal. (FIBA is French and stands for Federation International de Basketball Amateur, in English in means International Basketball Federation.) Shawn Kemp also appeared on a celebrity basketball game on MTV called Rock ’N’ Jock, where Shawn dunked on the young Leonardo DiCaprio. Also, during the Rock ‘N’ Jock he played one on one with Queen Latifah, she stole the ball from Shawn and made a lay-up! In 1995-1996 Kemp and Payton led the Supersonics to a record of 64 wins and their first NBA Finals since 1979.
