Title:
Investigation of the Enzymatic Effects of Materials on Hydrogen Peroxide Solution Objective:
To investigate the enzymatic effect of various materials in the hydrogen peroxide solution
Apparatus and Equipment:
Beaker, Boiling tubes, Water bath, Pen knife, Glass rod, Parafilm.
Materials:
Fresh liver, Potato cubes, Manganese dioxide, Hydrogen peroxide, Wood splints
Procedures:
1. Six fresh empty boiling tubes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 were labeled. 2. The liver provided was cut into three pieces of roughly 0.8cm X 0.8cm X 0.5cm. 3. One piece of liver was placed into tube 1. 4. The second piece of liver was placed into the tube 2. Tube 2 was placed in the boiling water for about five minutes. The tube was removed from boiling water and let cool. 5. The third piece of liver was put into test tube and was mashed gently into a pulp with a glass rod. 6. Potato cubes of roughly 0.8cm X 0.8cm X 0.5cm were cut. One cube was placed into tube 4. 7. Two portions of 0.5g of manganese dioxide powder were measured. Each portion were poured into tube 5 and tube 6. 8. Tube 6 was put in boiling water for 5 minutes. 9. Another six fresh empty test tubes were prepared. 5cm3 of hydrogen peroxide was put into each of them. 10. Hydrogen peroxide was quickly added into the test tubes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. 11. The parafilm provided were stretch quickly and the mouth of the test tubes was sealed. 12. The test tubes were left for 20 minutes until a lot of gas being produced in some test tubes as evidenced by the bulging of parafilm from the test tube mouth. 13. A glowing splint was inserted into each tube one at a time by just penetrating the parafilm with it. 14. All observations were recorded in the table. Observations on each tube were recorded immediately after the reaction has started.
