Hope is the belief that change will occur. In To kill A Mockingbird authored by Harpee Lee hope is presented through the layers of prejudice and racism with unjust system that the people of the South live by. It explores how the stereotypical people of Maycomb, Alabama and how they live their social life and their ambition of change is longing for the future.
Racism is biased on fear and fear is dissolved through understanding. In To kill a mockingbird the atmosphere amongst the people is white overpowering and against the black, there is no equality between the two. Scout and Jem where never exposed to the prejudice in the town till the Tom Robinson trail and even then it was hard for the children to understand why there so much blind hatred towards the two races. The hero in the novel Atticus, Scout and Jem father and the lawyer of T.R shows his children the skill to understanding and speaks about it in the trail, hoping that the town will at least consider to change their thoughts next time they encounter the opposite race. “you never really know a person till you consider things from their point of view… until you climb into their skin and walk around it”, this quote explains the basic skill towards defeating prejudice that until you look at things from the other persons view you will never be able to understand where they are coming from. Maycomb County has nothing to fear but fear itself and the racism that flows within the town depth that can only be brought down by understanding. Hope exist in the novel because Scout finally understood where Authar Radley was coming from and learnt the skill without losing her innocent good faith in humanity.
Hope is symbolised through Bigotry. “Nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don’t mean anything like snot nose….it slipped into usage with some people like ourselves when they want a common ugly term to label someone”, the term ‘nigger-lover’ is a common name given to someone that would defend or help a nigger, in this case Atticus Finch was labelled the nigger-lover by defending Tom. A person will most likely use an aggressive response when they know they are losing a battle and are too stubborn to understand where they went wrong. Bob Ewell and many other characters in the novel use this term to members of the Finch family. Bob Ewell is a narrow minded character in the novel yet he knowingly uses the word to insult Atticus understanding that it is wrong. So if Bob the most narrow minded character in the novel can understand that he is wrong, than hope is symbolised through his bigotry words that Bob understands he is wrong but is just too naïve to understand that he is being racist, and racism is biased on fear and fear is dissolved through understanding. So if Bob Ewell can understand he is being racist cause he scared to lose the trail then there is hope t that the rest of the town may one day understand there faults to.
The law of equality, hope is the push for the law of equality to rise. “All men our equal in our courts”. This phrase symbolises what the court in America morally uphold that all men are equal in courts no matter what. Atticus, Judge Taylor and many other authority figures in the novel try to brace this law no matter what culture differences states between racial identities. The trail between Tom Robinson and Bob Ewell was the most hopeful yet unjust event in the novel. Judge Taylor, Atticus and Bob’s lawyer all knew what the outcome of trail would be, but they didn’t stop doing their job none the less Atticus still defended Tom while knowing he had to persuade a morally uneducated jury. Hope is braced that if the courts of the land stand by the law of equality and continue to persuade it to the people of the land than unjust trails such as Tom Robinsons will decrease.
