Jon Krakauer was born on April 12, 1954 in Brookline, Massachusetts. he is son of Lewis Joseph Krakauer and Carol Ann Krakauer. When Jon was eight his father introduced him to mountaineering. In 1996 he published Into the Wild and it spent two years in the New York Times best seller list. In 2003 his book, Under the Banner of Heaven became his third non-fiction bestseller.
His mountain climbing and out door adventures influenced some of his writings that he did. After Jon graduated college he went out into the wilderness by himself for a few weeks. He climbed a new route on the Devils Thumb, in Alaska, which was an experience specifically described in Eiger Dreams and in Into the Wild. He was also asked to write an article about the climbs he had made, which were published in a journal for the American Alpine Club. From there on the editors began to give him more assignments.
