Depression is a mental disorder often caused by the chemical imbalance of the brain. The symptoms vary from person to person when their diagnosed with depression. The symptoms are feeling hopeless and helpless, a lack of self-esteem, find everything less enjoyable, difficulty making decisions, having suicidal thoughts and harming one self and etc.

Depression can be common between families and past onto generations, however there can be other biological effects. Seligman (1975) theory was that humans associate with one thing or another that trigger the process. Due to this he undertook an experiment (Seligman's experiment), he would ring a bell and then give a light shock to the dog. A few time after the dog has been shocked, the dog reacts to the shock as though it already been shocked.
As for the second part of the experiment, Seligman put each dog into a large crate, segregated through the middle with a low fence This means that if the dog preferred to jump over the fence, it would have been able to if necessary. One side of the floor was electrified; however, the other side of the fence wasn’t. Seligman experimented on dogs that have not been through the first part of the experiment. The dog that was not exposed to the shocks, as they were able to jump quickly over the fence. Seligman then placed the dog on the side and then operated a light shock, with the dogs that failed to avoid the shocks. For this part of the experiment, his assumption was not correct.
