ABSTRACT
Termites are the leading cause of the destruction of wooden furnitures. One of them the Sapindus vastator known as the Philippine Milk Termite is the most destructive of them all. This research focuses on terminating Sapindus trifoliatus using soapnut extract. First, the procedure is done by preparing all the materials mainly, soapnut, fluorence flask and stove for boiling. Second, prepare three set ups respectively in each set up the amount applied is 2 ml, 3 ml, 5ml. After applying the soapnut on each set up, observation must take place, time needed for the soapnut to terminate the termites must be recorded. The disposal is done by putting the three set ups in one container and burn it, this will ensure that the termites are surely killed. The result of set up A is that about ¼ of the termites survived the 2 ml applied on the soapnut extract; it took 7.5 seconds before the other termites died. On set up B, the 3 ml applied was enough to kill the entire termite; it took 6 seconds before all of the termites died. On set up C, the 6 ml of soapnut was more than enough to kill all of the termites, it

This solution is also known as an insecticide, which in simpler terms is a chemical (Emamectin Benzoate). This would be injected into the base of any ash tree and is used to kill off the EBA or any other unwanted pests. Now many wonder if it will hurt the tree, and the answer is no. This chemical is not only killing the EBA, but also helping the ash trees redeem their strength (Tree-age). In studies, after using the Tree-age, the percentage of the EBA and any other pests have dramatically decreased. In research, after only a month of having injected the insecticide into the tree, it is close to 99% clearance of the EBA. This solution has been proven to eliminate massive amounts of larva and adults (Emamectin Benzoate). Although this chemical is extremely effective, there are some drawbacks. Unfortunately, this is a highly sensitive chemical and needs to be inserted into the tree properly, or the effect won’t be as successful, therefore, anytime it needs to be injected into the tree, it needs to be completed by a professional. Another downfall is that the chemical should be re-applied every two years (Tree-age). With these downfalls it may seem impossible, but the idea of this insecticide is to slow the insect from spreading. One easy solution that will slow the growth, which everyone can cooperate in is to not move firewood. After cutting an infested ash tree, the larva will still…

We conducted the experiment with termites in order to determine how they react to pheromones present in different colors of ballpoint pen ink. The experiment consisted of two parts: in first part we used a ballpoint pen with blue ink, in second – a ballpoint pen with red ink. The reaction of termites was measured by their performance in 1 minute. Every termite in experimental group went through 3 tries in each part of the experiment. The results were recorded and analyzed. The experiment showed that the termites’ reaction was virtually the same for different colors of ink.…

Termites are small, white cylindrical insects that are usually found in wood or in the ground. They are know for deteriorating wood in households by eating the wood in the house structure. They do this because the wood contains cellulose. Termites use a caste system in the community similar to ants. They have a single queen, workers, soldiers and young that make up their community. In nature, termites’ breakdown wood in order to use the cellulose and nutrients to help plants grow. Termites of course are notorious for eating the wood of households and can be a huge problem and inconvenience to any household because of their size and difficulty to remove from the wood. The termites set up their community in the wood and also don’t leave until all of the wood is eaten.…

Thus, the need for alternatives to mainstream pest control is quite pressing. In reality, people have been using different materials as pest control against Callosobruchus maculatus for centuries. Ancient Egyptians in 1000 B.C., for instance, used ash dust as pest control for their stores of grain (M. Hafez, Nadia Z. Dimetry, and M. H. Abbass). More recently, essential oils have been considered effective pest control methods since they are comprised of volatile compounds and are not harmful to most mammals (G.K Ketoh et al.). While the effectiveness of essential oils has been tested, the effectiveness of sunflower oil specifically is uncertain and thus needs to be tested. The goals of this experiment are to determine whether sunflower seed oil will be effective in preventing the C. maculatus from laying eggs on the Vigna unguiculata. Based on the success of other essential oils, if the Vigna unguiculata are covered with concentrations of sunflower oil, then the C. maculatus will not be able to lay as many eggs on the beans as they would in the absence of sunflower oil. For the purpose of testing this hypothesis, the independent variable is the presence of sunflower oil, whereas the dependent variable is the number of eggs found on the beans after a period of…

    Termite Lab Report

Termites produce special chemicals within their bodies called pheromones. Because termites are usually found inside dark areas, pheromones help them communicate in these places. Past studies have suggested that ink inside ballpoint pens contains pheromones, causing termites to follow any trail created by the ink. If a pathway is drawn with an ink pen, then a termite will be attracted to the path and trace it due to the pheromones. To test the behavior of termites in relation with the presence of ink, we outlined two shapes with two different writing utensils and timed how long out of a sixty second time period that the termite spent on each path. The results showed that termites spend a substantially longer amount of time following the path of an ink pen than paths made from other writing utensils. The tested termites spent an average amount of 26.9 out of 60 seconds on paths made by the ink pen, but an average of only 2.4 of 60 seconds on a path made by a Sharpie marker. The p-value for the data is 0.00309 for the pen and 0.000214 for the Sharpie marker. The results suggest that termites are attracted to the pheromones contained in ink. This contributes to understanding how termites communicate and travel in areas without light.…
