Adaptation

Definition: Adaptation is the process of how organisms develop special structures and internal processes to enable them to live in their environment.
Definition: Adaptation is the process of how organisms develop special structures and internal processes to enable them to live in their environment.

Organisms can be adapted in two ways: 1. Body structure (e.g. Small ears to reduce heat loss)
2. Body processes (e.g. Osmoregulation in salmon)

There are several factors which cause adaptation to occur: Physical Factors * * *

Other organisms * * *

Adaptations Match the following animals to the adaptations below, and suggest why they are useful. Think about the habitat each animal lives in! * Polar Bear * Camel * Great White Shark

Adaptation | Animal | How is this useful? | Thick Fur | | | Stream Lined Body | | | Fat stored in a hump | | | Ability to close nostrils | | | Fins | | | Ability to smell blood | | | Small ears | | | White Fur | | | Gills | | | Large Claws | | | Sandy coloured hair | | | Long eye lashes | | | Large Feet | | | Sharp teeth | | | Layer of blubber | | |

Adaptations in Plants

Plants also have adaptations that help them survive better in their environment. Marram grass is a good example of a plant which is adapted to live in very dry conditions, for example on sand dune systems. The leaves of the marram grass are adapted to survive with the limited water available in the desert. In very dry conditions, the leaves of the marram grass roll up to form long tubes. This helps drain any water down towards the roots of the plant.

Match the adaptations of the marram grass leaves with their function

Waxy Cuticle Reduce water loss through transpiration Stomata sunk in pits Trap a layer of moist air close to the leaf surface

The basic idea of natural selection is that a population of organisms can change over the generations if individuals having certain heritable traits leave more offspring than other individuals. The result of natural selection is evolutionary adaptation, a prevalence of inherited characteristics that enhance organisms’ survival and reproduction in specific environments.…

As a result of natural selection, a population—a group of individuals of the same species living in the same place at the same time—can change over generations. Natural selection leads to evolutionary adaptation, a population’s increase in the frequency of traits suited to the environment (Simon, Reece, Dickey, 2010).…

Throughout the exhibit I saw many examples of adaptation. Under each unique display, there would be a description on how the organism would live in there habitat. One example talked about their tails, and that some were more flexible and broad, for sudden bursts of speed to attack prey or escape danger. Others would have stiff, sickle shaped tails for endurance on long journeys. Another example of adaptation is the blubber of whales and manatees. In colder these animals climates contain more blubber to keep them insulated from the cold. This exhibit made me realize the significance in adaptations and how important they are in life, without the necessary adaptations, many species could die…

Living things that are well adapted to their environment survive and reproduce. Those that are not well adapted don’t survive and reproduce. Any inherited trait that increases an organism’s ability to survive is called an adaptation. Remember that these adaptations are inherited traits; they are not changes that an individual chooses to make and that increases fitness, which is defined as the ability to survive and reproduce.…

Webster dictionary defines adaption as a change in a plant or animal that makes it better able to live in a particular place or situation. Plants and animals alike adapt in the face of adversity in order to survive and prosper. In the Botany of Desire, Micheal Pollan uses the theme of adaption to explain how the apple, tulip, cannabis, and potato have been able to survive so many centuries and become so intertwined with the human civilization. Just like the plants Pollan examined, animals have adapted to their environments in order to survive, those unable to adapt and evolve would become extinct; however, those successful -- i.e. the human race -- would go on to be a dominant race. The ability to adapt in order to survive is the human instinct that allows individuals to prosper in difficult situations, those who are unable to adapt become the people who make up the bottom rung of society.…

For such a complex concept a direct definition leaves more questions than answers. When a species changes biologically over time, evolution guides the process. All living species on earth effect one and other, during the evolutionary process. We depend on that change for our change and they depend on us to affect their change (Park, 2014). The success of those changes depends on the ever constant fight to adapt to the natural environment. For a species to survive depends on the best genetic mutation to survive the current environment. Humans use natural selection or changing the environment of species to cause the desired mutation to help produce food.…
