Date: 19th January 2010
Aim: To observe, draw and label the parts of a nephron.
Apparatus:
Slide of the transverse section of a kidney
Pencil
Paper
Microscope
Method:
The slide of the transverse section of a kidney was mounted on the microscope and observed under high power.
Drawings of the parts of the nephron were made.
Calculations of Magnification:
Loop of Henle
One Ocular Division = 0.22 µm
Size of Specimen = 2 ocular divisions
Conversion of Ocular Divisions to ‘µm’ = (2 * 0.22) µm = 0.44 µm
Size of Drawing = 14.6 cm
Conversion of ‘cm’ to ‘µm’ = (14.6 * 1,000) = 14,600 µm
Magnification = Size of Drawing / Size of Specimen = 14,600 / 0.44 = 33,181.82 X
Collecting Duct
One Ocular Division = 0.22 µm
Size of Specimen = 1 ocular divisions
Conversion of Ocular Divisions to ‘µm’ = (1 * 0.22) µm = 0.22 µm
Size of Drawing = 9.6 cm
Conversion of ‘cm’ to ‘µm’ = (9.6 * 1,000) = 9,600 µm
Magnification = Size of Drawing / Size of Specimen = 9,600 / 0.22 = 43,636.36 X
Bowman’s Capsule
One Ocular Division = 0.22 µm
Size of Specimen = 2 ocular divisions
Conversion of Ocular Divisions to ‘µm’ = (2 * 0.22) µm = 0.44 µm
Size of Drawing = 11.9 cm
Conversion of ‘cm’ to ‘µm’ = (11.9 * 1,000) = 11,900 µm
Magnification = Size of Drawing / Size of Specimen = 11,900 / 0.44 = 27,045.45 X
PCT
One Ocular Division = 0.22 µm
Size of Specimen = 5 ocular divisions
Conversion of Ocular Divisions to ‘µm’ = (5 * 0.22) µm = 1.1 µm
Size of Drawing = 15.4 cm
Conversion of ‘cm’ to ‘µm’ = (15.4 * 1,000) = 15,400 µm
Magnification = Size of Drawing / Size of Specimen = 15,400 / 1.1 = 14,000 X
DCT
One Ocular Division = 0.22 µm
Size of Specimen = 5 ocular divisions
Conversion of Ocular Divisions to ‘µm’ = (5 * 0.22) µm = 1.1 µm
Size of Drawing = 15.9 cm
Conversion of ‘cm’ to ‘µm’ = (15.9 * 1,000) = 15,900 µm
Magnification = Size of Drawing / Size of Specimen = 15,900 / 1.1 = 14,454.6 X
