on health care began to bounce back and forth in my mind. And I am wondering
if there should be more health professionals in the health care industry,
biopsychosocial should be taken as part of the health care professionals curriculum.
With biopsychosocial the cause of an illness can be determined from different
angles compared to a single model, the biomedical. The root cause of an illness
can be determined by the health behavior. With so many people today with health
challenges, it requires bio-psychosocial knowledge to be able to admit proper
treatment especially with those with psychological problems.
The topic interests me firstly because I am in the …show more content…
health science. Secondly, I can see wide view of
multiple sections of health applications to health problems. With reference to Engel "who developed
biopsychosocial and who integrated the psychological (the'psyco') and the environmental (the 'social')
into the traditional biomedical (the 'bio') model of health.
The bio contributing factors include genetics,
viruses, bacteria and structural defects and the psycho aspect of health covers health expectations,
emotions, and health behavior, e.g. smoking, diet, exercise or alcohol consumption's. Engel,(1977).
From Wikipedia.org, "the biopsychosocial model is a broad view that attributes disease outcome to the
intricate, variable interaction of biological factors (genetic, biochemical, etc), psychological factors (mood,
personality, behavior, etc.) and social factors (cultural, familial, socioeconomic, medical, etc.").
Things happens in life to human like illness which has deep root that biomedical cannot cover.
Biomedical can cover the surface (external to internal) but does not have the psychological approach.
But I see biopsychosocial as a big departmental store which has everything needed in the family from
clothing to cookware, grocery, furniture's, electronics etc. makes life easy for shoppers.
In health psychology, "Focuses on the health of clients and patients. Behavioral health is a way of
promoting well-being. Behavior is an aspect of identity that can be changed". Sandler,
E.P.(2009)
As Sandler put it, health behavior is what you can change. If an illness is caused by an environment
or by a particular health behavior, e.g. smoking, diet, alcohol etc., there is possibility of change.
In health psychology, behavior governs the conditions either in the positive way or in the negative
aspect of the situation. For example, someone with high cholesterol can come off it if he decides to live
a healthy lifestyle, no more unhealthy food and engages in a regular exercise.
In conclusion, biopsychosocial model is a useful perspective. Its application goes beyond the surface to
health behavior, health cognition even to social aspect of health.
