Biopsychosocial Model Essay
Define Health Health is defined by the World Health Organization as “a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (Taylor, 2015, p.3). Psychologists’ use this as their core conception of health. They don’t define it as the absence of illness. It is recognized as an achievement which involves balancing a person mental, physical and social well-being. It is referred to as the wellness of the optimum state of health. This is true because health psychologists focus on “health promotion and maintenance; prevention and treatment of illness; the etiology and correlates of health illness, and dysfunction; and the health care system and the formulation of health policy” (Taylor, 2015 p.3). A recourse for everyday living is health. It is not a resource of living but it is positive. It also emphasizes social and personal resources as well as the physical concept.

Its aim was to understand all the aspects which led to the development of specific medical conditions so that top level care could be provided. Engel wanted to emphasize the distance aspects of care such as “the patient; the patient’s social context; and the means in place for dealing with illness, namely doctors and the larger system of health care” (Saylor, 2015). The biopsychosocial model is idea that the mind and body works together to determine health and illness. It assumes that health and illness are consequences of the interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors. The biopsychosocial model thinks that biological, psychological, and social factors are important in determining health and illness. Health is achieved through attention to biological, psychological, and social factors instead of something that is taken for granted. The mind-body connection is another name for the biopsychosocial

The biopsychosocial model describes the concept that biological, psychological, and social factors interact as complex networks that influence one’s health and illness (Suls & Rothman, 2004; Gatchel, 2007). One of the main goals of health psychology is to understand the relationship and interaction between these factors. Health psychologists examine treatment effects on a person’s health by applying interventions that modifies the three factors that comprise the biopsychosocial model (Suls & Rothman, 2004; MacKinnon & Luecken, 2008). Numerous studies and interventions have been designed to improve physical and psychological health based on the biopsychosocial model (cite some of these). Among these interventions, the use of mindfulness-based…

The central function of this theory is to show the individual as self-determining, but as also determined by personal history and general personal characteristics. Health is a dynamic process, not a static state. Health, to put it differently, is a lifestyle conditioned by a number of choices made by the individual to actually live a healthy lifestyle. The medical profession itself is only a small part of this world. The individual is posited in this model as "being" health, "living" it, rather than considering health a static state. Health is a lifestyle.…

Biopsychosocial model suggests that the understanding of the illness from the perspective of the mind is crucial to the complex nature of health. To have a more in-depth view over the health experiences and the nature of illness one must add psychological and social factors to the biomedical explanation (Morrisson, Bennett, 2012). For example, if we intend to analyze depression only from the biological point view, we would only identify its biomedical causes: the genetics of depression. However, depression, as supported by the research, can be caused by multiple causes such as traumatic event…

Firstly, the importance of using George Engel’s biopsychosocial model cannot be undermined simply as a theoretical notion learnt during BH lecture. It has practical applications in diagnosis and management of a patient’s problem because it incorporates the teaching of biological sciences with the psychological and social aspect of an illness. The biopsychosocial model represents a newer, broader and more holistic approach than the prevailing biomedical model which is based purely on the concept of the human body as a biological machine (Carrio, Suchman, & Epstein, 2004). For example, patient X shows biological symptoms of liver damage due to excessive drinking. However the underlying physiological reason to this is because patient X is depressed. Moreover, patient X lives in an area where…

The biopsychosocial model is a general model or approach stating that biological, psychological and social factors, all play a significant role in human functioning in the context of disease or illness. It posits that, health and well being is best understood in terms of a combination of all three factors. When we talk about biopsychosocial well being, the concept of sex or sexual behavior cannot be ignored because it is influenced by biological, psychological and social factors. Days of conventional, procreative sex are long gone. These days, individuals (victims of abnormal sexual behavior by partners or predators) are gravely affected, mentally, physically and emotionally by said sexual behavior which may be unconventional, violent and dangerous.…

According to the biomedical model, health constitutes the freedom from disease, pain, or defect, thus making the normal human condition "healthy". The model's focus on the physical processes, such as the pathology, the biochemistry and the physiology of a disease, does not take into account the role of social factors or individual subjectivity. The model also overlooks the fact that the diagnosis (that will effect treatment of the patient) is a result of negotiation between doctor and patient.…

The Bio-Medical model believes in the passive treatment of patients in such a manner that they do not contribute in their diagnosis or treatment of their ailments whereas the Psycho-Socio-Environmental model believes that the doctor-patient relationship should be on a more personal level, with both parties having equal decision making power. This is exactly where the main difference between the two models lies. The Bio-medical model suggests that a patient’s body can be treated like a machine (in other words “fixed”), thus medicine adopts a mechanical metaphor with the doctor as the mechanic. The Psycho-Socio-Environmental model focuses on both the patient’s physical and sociological wellbeing.…
