The media constantly bombards viewers with the so-called “war on drugs”; indeed the issue that many nations face is one of concern. Due to competition among drug cartels, innocent people suffer injuriously; therefore, these nations wage a theoretical war against the spread and corruption of drugs. However, aside from there being a “war on drugs”, it seems that in today’s modern quest for perfect health, or at least prolonged health, the drug industries in the United States (also addressed as Big Pharma) compete to find and sell the next big drug. These drug industries do not wage war against drugs, instead a “war for drugs”.…

Biodel’s use of biotechnology expertise in the three prime areas of Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, and Immunodiagnostics has led their company into some great opportunities. Biodel created a synthetic serum to replace fetal calf serum and horse serum, and provide a more consistently available product for scientific researchers. Biodel’s Molecular Biology division used DNA technology to gain 60% of the market share of growth factors and stock the largest collection of commercially available synthetic nucleotides, which was 50% of their sales. When I first started this paper I would have to admit that I was pretty green in the field of Biotechnology, I had a brief understanding but nothing near an in depth understanding of the field. So when I first started looking for a success story, I tied my views on successful innovation in the areas that I am familiar with to the biotech field. The major theme that emerged was that successful innovation equals a product that produces quality profits for a company. After further research on the success of innovation, you do realize that profits may be the end goal of the company but success stems from a total company wide effort, that may start many years before a single cent of profit is ever realized.…

Chemotherapy is the use of chemical matters to cure diseases (1). The origins of chemotherapy is attributed to Paul Erhlich, a Nobel Laureate in Medicine (1814-1915), who is recognized as the ‘Father of Chemotherapy’ due to his works in stains using different dyes and his discovery of the drug ‘bullets’ (2). In his workings of stains using different dyes on lab animals, Paul Erhlich discovered that different dyes had varying affinities as to which blood cell it could attach to. Hence, he discovered the presence of chemo-receptors. With this discovery, Paul Erhlich worked with various chemists and went through several inventions to produce drugs such as suramin, to cure common illnesses and ailments (2). Paul Erhlich has been attributed for his theory that ‘bad’ cells in the body were attacked by administered drugs through a molecular binding process that allows those ‘bad’ cells to undergo necrosis (3).…
