Biotechnology In Gattaca
Biotechnology is one of the most exciting and amazing technologies this world has seen. Biotechnology is the use of living organisms or biological processes to develop useful agricultural, industrial, or medical products. In other words, biotechnology is the procedure of using organisms and their components to create useful things for humans. As a matter of fact, people are being aware of this new technology through different types of entertainment like movies, TV shows, and video games. As more obstacles arise in our world, biotechnology is being used in many different ways and forms to resolve the problems and make our planet vigorous again. Speaking about biotechnology, the movie Gattaca is an outstanding example of the use of this new and …show more content…
Genetic testing is a type of medical test that determines changes in chromosomes, genes, or proteins in the human body. To put it in another way, this process is done using a sample of blood, hair, or skin from a human being which can help identify genetic disorders and other diseases. For instance, Gattaca uses this process on Vincent when he is born to figure out his certain disabilities like horrendous eyesight and serious heart problem. Altogether, the movie uses this process the same way it’s completed in real life by taking a blood sample from Vincent right when he is born making it surely convincing. To change the topic, genome editing is another example of biotechnology used in Gattaca. Genome editing is the process of inserting, deleting or replacing DNA in the genome of a living organism. In other words, this process is used to remove genes creating genetic diseases from individuals and replacing them with favorable genes. For example, Gattaca uses this process to create perfect individuals who are considered valid in their world. Many characters in Gattaca are created with genome editing including Jerome which makes him valid and Vincent invalid. This process would be considered incredible at the time the movie was made, but now with CRISPR/CAS-9 method, this process is definitely possible and believable. To summarize, genetic testing and genome editing can both unquestionably be a positive change in our world and help the future generations be born without genetic

    However, genetic manipulation is still a slippery slope for more trivial “improvements”. The people in the film did not stop at eliminating harmful diseases but they also started altering things like muscle mass, intelligence, personality traits, hair color and this is when eugenics becomes problematic. Like the society in Gattaca, we could be at risk of becoming a superficial society obsessed with perfection. For example Eugene Marrow, the man Vincent borrows his DNA samples from in order to pose as a valid was obsessed with perfection. Marrow was genetically engineered to be a winning swimmer, his entire existence was dedicated to swimming and yet he still wasn’t good enough. Eventually, we came across someone who was as better swimmer than him and he received a silver metal. Marrow began to feel useless, he was genetically perfect and yet he was not, so he attempted to kill himself by running in front of a car. He failed, survived and as a result was paralyzed from the waist down. Marrow became even more depressed, he found some use in helping Vincent but in the end, he killed himself because even though he was genetically engineered to be the “best” but he was not and thus a failure. By meeting Vincent, an invalid who was far more qualified to do great things despite his genetical disadvantages, made Marrow realize that genetic manipulation is not what makes you the “best”. Perhaps it gives you an advantage, which why Marrow decided to give Vincent, his DNA samples but that is not was Vincent eventually became an astronaut, he became one based on his own natural merit.
