Bird By Bird Summary
Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott was a very enlightening reading experience. You can see within the first page of reading that the author has been influenced by writing at an early age. It made her seem very credible and gave more influence on her words about writing. I like that at some points she goes past the surface of just talking about why she liked writing, but also what her family was like and how her childhood affected her. Her humor helped to make this more bearable to read and understand. I liked that at time she was extremely humorous, but could jump into something very sad like when she talked about her need to belong in the world. I was extremely influenced by the entire introduction. I could

The book I chose was Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher’s First Year by Esme Raji Codell. I chose this book because I honestly judged it from the title on the book review assignment page and found this to possibly be something that might help me in my journey into becoming a teacher. I found this book to very amusing and very touching. I thought that Esme's attitude and writing style was funny and easy to read and understand. One of my favorite stories in the book is the one when Esme made Billy Williams teach the class for a day because he was misbehaving. Esme threatened suspension to Billy for cursing and being disrespectful, so he accepted the punishment of teaching the class for the day instead of suspension. I thought it was great that he was able to mimic and recite specific lines that Esme used even though he didn’t always seem…

Prose exposes numerous straw man arguments with To Kill a Mockingbird. Prose critiques the novel in a confident, yet slightly harsh manner. She believes that the novel could’ve been different if there was just a bit more detail. Prose interprets To Kill a Mockingbird in a way that focuses on prejudice and racism.…

It was different to see that she could come from that place of isolation to socialize with her peers. It started with simply following them rather than sitting alone in a classroom, and led to full on conversations with other characters. I liked that she was able to be so forward when she did decide to speak to the others. She showed a lot of herself by sharing personal things, and released the fact that she was a compulsive liar. In my opinion, she knew this lying was a problem and that was part of the reason she was reluctant to speak to her fellow…

Haruki Murakami, a contemporary Japanese writer, confronts the contradictions of modern Japanese identity in his novel, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, to depict the desolate mood of Japan after World War II. Identity loss and solitude surfaced due to the drastic decrease in population following the atomic bombings in Japan. As argued by Historian Rielly (2010) in Kamikaze Attacks of World War II, this loss of identity has resulted in countless suicides across various regions of Japan, such as the Okigahara forest (9). The recurring theme of war in the novel asserts the importance of individualism as a key component within Japan’s conformed society. Haruki Murakami utilizes symbolism, motif, and allegories throughout The Wind-up Bird Chronicle…

The significant themes of Chopin's The Awakening are introduced immediately in the opening scene of the bird in the cage. Edna feels trapped in the small realm of her home, as the bird is trapped in its cage. A major theme of the novel, liberation verses conformity is introduced because although Edna struggles if she is liberated, she is really like the bird because she doesn't have a choice. Society makes the choice for her. The indifferent manner in which Mr. Pontellier reacts to the bird introduces how men are depicted and their role in the novel.…

The birds joyously dance around, singing exaggerated paeans unto Pithetaerus, their sad excuse for a king. They start, what seems to be, an endless rambling frenzy of compliments that feed his growing ego. In Aristophanes’ play, The Birds, a comical scene is illustrated that brilliantly fuses together irony and humor. The use of hyperboles and rhyme shape Aristophanes’ satirical tone, which sends his audience into a state of gasping laughter. Although he uses poetic diction to define Pithetaerus, the choice of words ironically set up a comparison between expectations and reality.…

My favorite book my mother would read to me was Where the Sidewalk Ends. I would always think to myself,” I cannot wait until I can read for myself, so I can read as many stories as I want without waiting for my mom to read for me”. As I got older I would always challenge myself to expand my reading capacity, so I could be the best reader out of all of my peers. Not only did reading stories help me excel in school, but it also taught me how to use my imagination and be who I am as a person. Reading books would let me escape from reality for however long the duration of the book was..…

I loved "The Canary". It is a simple story about an older woman who makes her living from cooking meals for three young men. The most important thing in her life is her pet canary. Anyone who has ever had a beloved animal in their life who helped them through times of sadness and loneliness will relate directly to this story. There are symbolic matters that could be made of the caged bird but I will pass on that as I think the wonder of this story is in the beauty of the writing.…
