We will talk about birds and show different pictures of birds. Then encourage the children to share their experiences of seeing birds. Ask the children if they know how to sound like a bird. Those that do take turns standing up and making their own bird sound or song. You can make suggestions such as a chicken, turkey, baby chick, etc.
Look at pictures of birds again. What is different? What is the same? Name the parts of birds. What do they use there different parts for? (Beaks, claws, wings)
Talk about what different birds like to eat.
Birds build nests. What kinds of things do birds use to make nests? Small sticks and soft things to keep the eggs warm and safe. Collect several types of bird nests or pictures of bird nests.
All birds lay eggs. Each different birds eggs look different and are different sizes. (Show pictures of various eggs) Usually birds incubate their eggs by supplying heat from their bodies. When eggs hatch the parents take care of the baby birds until they can leave the nest. Ostrich eggs are so strong that an adult human can stand on one and it will not break.
Birds are the only creatures with feathers. Compare feathers. Feathers come in different sizes and colors. Feathers keep the birds, cool and warm. Feathers also repel water to keep birds dry. Feathers are used to help birds when they fly. Allow the children to tickle their cheeks with the feather.
