Birth Control Pill Research Paper
What is the Birth Control Pill?
The birth control pill is most often taken to prevent pregnancy, though doctors may prescribe it for other conditions as well. With the number of birth control options available, women should try to find the most convenient method that fits both her lifestyle and needs. Women who are interested in various birth control options, including the pill, should consult their gynecologist.
How Does the Birth Control Pill Work?
The main function of the pill is to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, which occurs when an egg is released from the ovaries during a woman’s monthly cycle. Stopping ovulation means that the ovaries will not release an egg; without an egg, fertilization cannot occur. Even if the sperm were to reach the uterus, the hormones in the pill change the lining of the uterine wall, keeping the egg from being

Depending on the type of pill you are prescribed, the cost can range anywhere from $10 to $50 a month. Fortunately, most insurance companies cover birth control pills under their prescription plans. If a woman has problems affording her birth control, she can talk to her doctor about switching brands. Another alternative is to visit a family planning clinic, like Planned Parenthood, as they usually provide the birth control pill for less.
Possible Side Effects of the Birth Control Pill
Some women taking the pill may not experience any side effects, while others may only have a few. Most side effects subside after several months on the pill; however, if the side effects become bothersome or worsen, the doctor can prescribe a different kind of pill. Women over 35 who take the pill are encouraged not to smoke, as it can lead to blood clots.
The most common side effects of the birth control pill include:

The combination pills are made of the hormones estrogen and progestin, both of which are hormones found in a woman’s body naturally. The hormones in the pill keep the eggs from leaving the ovaries and also thicken the cervical mucus to keep sperm from getting near the eggs. If a woman is taking the pill as directed, then there is only a one in one-hundred chance that she will become pregnant. If a woman is not taking the pill as directed there is a nine-in-one-hundred chance that she will still become pregnant. This means that the birth control pill is rather effective. There are many risks and side effects that come with the pill, but many women are able to adjust with few or no problems. The more common side effects are bleeding between periods, breast tenderness, and nausea and vomiting. As with all unnatural birth control, there is a risk that a woman’s menstrual cycle will not re-regulate, or the risk of losing fertility. This happens to many women, especially when taking it for non-birth-controlling purposes (“Birth…

Birth control has come a long way. Since 1963, when it was approved by the FDA, women everywhere have been using it to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but are they really that effective? Birth control can be taken in many forms other than a pill, unlike condoms. It can in the form of a patch, an implant, a shot, or a vaginal ring. The pill and the vaginal ring are the most popular forms of birth control for women. The side effects of birth control include headaches, dizziness, and a decreased libido, which can be an inconvenience to both partners considering they use birth control to prevent pregnancy while having sex. The pill is 99% effective against pregnancy, and in no way does it protect against STDs. Birth control pills are usually only given with a prescription, but not all of them.…

The main purpose of the birth control pill is to simply give women a chance to put childbearing life on hold and do what they wish to do ranging from expressing their sexual freedom, gaining college education, establishing their career, and so on forth. I don’t think that anybody would have thought of how much of the effect that the birth control pill influenced the society under social, economic, and political manners (Cohen, 2005). A new sense of sexual freedom lead to acceptable hookup culture; women are extending their potentials by attending universities; women are slowly narrowing the gender ratio in male-dominated college majors; women are now being equally qualified to men in career field. Even though, the birth control pill causes various changes in the society for women. It has also brightened the negative light within the society, which is gender inequality. Thankfully, today’s generation is bringing the gender inequality to awareness and makes people realize that men are now also being pressured to be part of the social norm. I hope that for the future generations, the society will become more acceptable towards to both males and females despite of their career/personal backgrounds and gender as well. We must bring gender equality fully into the American and international…

Some of the main reasons for taking birth control pills are to treat the following: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), which causes irregular menstrual cycles, acne, and excess hair growth, and amenorrhea, or the lack of periods (YoungWomensHealth.org). Oftentimes, when birth control pills are prescribed for medical reasons, other than preventing pregnancy, then it is for severe cramps or heavy menstrual cycles. Birth control pills “contain one or two types of synthetic (man-made) female hormones, estrogen and progestin.” which helps a female get the hormones that her ovaries may not be making enough of (YoungWomensHealth.org). Even though a teen may be taking birth control pills for other medical reasons, it still has its side effects such as: irregular periods, nausea, headaches, mood changes, breakouts, and many more. However, most women usually have very little to no negative side effects. When taking birth control, the chances of having or getting anemia are lowered because there is less menstrual bleeding, and they also lower the chances of getting endometrial (uterus lining) cancer, ovarian cancer, and ovarian cysts (YoungWomensHealth.org). While birth control pills may be used for preventing pregnancy or other medical reasons, it does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases…
