Birth Order Affects Personality

Research has shown us that birth order affects personality whether it is intellectual performance, anxiety, or personal characteristics. Collectively, research suggests that first born child tend to be high in Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, but Low in Agreeableness. First born children also exhibit behaviors associated with Type A personality (Cloninger, 2013). Middle and younger children were confirmed to be high in Openness to Experience, Agreeableness, Extraversion but, low in Conscientiousness. Adler’s theory on birth order suggests the effects of birth order by associating first born children to be problem children due to dethronement. While, second/middle born children tend to behave envious due to competition with the first born sibling. Past literature supports current research but, the lack of diversity among samples constitutes implications with the study. Researchers believe this study is influential because it will bring diversity amongst other studies. In today’s society minorities in America are increasingly becoming the majority, but in research are often marginalized. This study intends to encourage researchers to further research to include more minorities who are commonly underrepresented. The current findings intend on impacted society by possibly revealing things about an individual's personality by interpreting how birth order may have affected them directly.
