Abstract
It may seem unimaginable, but the birth order of a child into a family can have some effects on one’s personality. Studies have shown that one’s birth order can and does influence certain personality traits in people some of the common traits are creativity, independence, intelligence just to name a few. Research looks at first-born (only children are classified with first-born) middle born and later born children. Psychologist Alfred Adler, was one of the first in the field of psychology to form the theory about the difference birth order could make. While he identified certain characteristics for a particular birth order he had a self-perceived place in his or her family. This paper examines the impact birth order has on personality.
A person personality is made patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make a person unique. It arises from within the individual and remains fairly consistent throughout life. Alfred Adler was the first to summarize the influence that birth order has on personality. Alfred Adler, believed that the order you were born had a direct effect on one’s personality. Adler, and other personality theorists believe that one’s family position can affect and individual’s experiences and development. It is believed that each order has its own unique set of personality traits. Adler suggested that first born are often more ambitious and tend to be more motivated to achieve than later born. Middle born is considered more rebellious and they are more likely to challenge authority. Youngest siblings tend be more sociable and usually get the most attention. Only children typically, have a difficult time going along with others and often strive for attention from adults and peers.
