Otto Von Bismarck’s use of Realpolitik to unify Germany was necessary. Bismarck had been given powerful positions in the government and took advantage of it for his country. It is understandable that he may have been as a cheating and lying leader. But, Otto did everything right for his country even if it meant stealing or playing tricks. “But no matter how late he went to bed, Bismarck found it hard to sleep. He was constantly worried about the fate of his country.” (pg. 67 Bismarck Book). This quote explains how loyal and how much he cared about his country. He did not sleep well, his diet was awful, along with a bad drinking problem. His life change from being a conservative, trying to get back old teachings and government but, eventually became a liberal. At the need of the wars he was greatly appreciated for his contribution in uniting Germany. His ways of uniting were very unlikely but they worked very well, they may have been mean or rude but he had one thing in his mind, unite the northern Germany with southern Germany. Creating the German Nation. Otto’s method of taking money from the parliament without permission was completely necessary. Other leaders and politicians thought this was in fact unnecessary. Bismarck did not the money he “stole” for himself, but he spent it all on the military to improve weapons and armory. Having a strong, well-trained army allowed him to give security to his people. With new and improved weapons, Germany’s army was stronger than its opponents. The Austrian Empire, Duches and the French were soon taken out by this powerful army. After his mission to conquer France was completed France paid a million franc fine that paid for Germany’s war expenses. Being a chancellor of Prussia meant that he controlled everything. His army encouraged southern German states to unite with Prussia because Prussia had a large army that allowed security. The army also allowed them to have money and land and resources for things they needed. These reasons are why Southern German States decided to be part of Prussian Empire. Bismarck also used war as a method of unifying Germany. With its strong powerful army, war was an even bigger contribution. With war, Bismarck had conquered many lands, having more resources and more people, southern German states were tempted to join. Wars also created more power, more land to control means more power. The wars brought the nations of Europe together. The as against the French showed that Prussia had total control of Europe, defeated the most powerful country really showed how Prussia was overpowered. All the wars and money put towards the military were all from Bismarck, his use of realpolitik, doing what is best for the county even if its not the right thing, it was much more efficient. War also allowed Germans to trust Bismarck. With the trust he gained, the people supported what he was doing. Using realpolitik to gather everyone up together was more efficient than waiting and taking time to develop. Bismarck didn’t have to use realpolitik to unite the German states, he could have waited and came up with another idea. If Bismarck waited or came up with another idea to unite Germany, France may have already taken over them before they gained too much power. Being efficient was much better than waiting for things to just happen. He was first a conservative, trying to get back old teachings but eventually saw that Germany needed change, and he changed Prussia greatly, in the most efficient way. He may have used peace treaties or spent his money more towards the people other than the military. But, the military gave the people security, the most important thing in Bismarck’s eyes, his people did have to worry about their most powerful neighbor, France. The people felt secure with the way Bismarck was leading them, there was no other efficient way that Bismarck could have worked on to unite Southern France with Prussia. Bismarck was the most appreciated leader in Germany. Today there is a holiday dedicated to him. Without his use of realpolitik, Germany today may have not been united the way it is. He used War, and Military strength to unite Germany, convincing southern Germany that they needed protection, they joined the Prussian Empire. Bismarck always thought about his country and how to improve it, yes he may have things that were wrong but he did it for his country. Without his early unification of Germany, They may have been crushed by their much greater opponents such as Austria or France. Bismarck had done everything right for his country.

In the 1800’s Germany was divided into a three thousand kingdoms and city states. These kingdoms all had different culture, religions, and traditions. As well as an attitude that they were the best, the effect lead to the division of Germany as broken nation and Napoleon took advantage of that and attacked. This influenced Germany to reduce its self-down to 39 kingdoms and unite as Napoleon organized them and put his family at throne. In the 1860’s a leader known as Otto Van Bismarck took leadership of Germany with intentions of making it a nation to be recognized. With his time in power he was obviously a militaristic leader with intentions that a strong military leads to a strong nation. Bismarck who had a “blood and iron” policy showed his military ways. This meant iron as in weapons and blood as in killing that as long as the job gets done you just need these two components. This seemed to be effective policy, because Bismarck initiated three wars and defeated and lead the way with this policy, and even the Austro-Prussia war only lasting seven weeks until Germany defeated Austria. As well defeating Denmark in 1866 and France in the France-Prussia war. Bismarck policies and way of leading with an iron fist was best for Germany as they became a strong nation and a force to be reckoned with.…

The Street, by Ann Petry, is a novel which heavily questions value of institutions in 1940’s Harlem, with some characters such as Lutie Johnson believing these fundamental organizations within America to be like a stone mansion, while time and time again Petry shows other characters in higher positions of power who have not put stock in those same institutions, recognizing them to be the house of cards that they are. Three prominent institutions within the novel deserve deep examination—that of marriage, law enforcement, and the State (with regards to children’s services). It is apparent in the novel that Petry believes ideas and groups put in place to assist members of society often fail at their function (particularly if said member is a…

Otto von Bismarck was one of the three most important political figures in Germany, besides Martin Luther and Adolph Hitler. Prior to World War I, Bismark contributed to and maintained Germany as an international power. In order to maintain Germany as an international power, Bismark’s overall first concern was to keep France isolated to prevent any retribution from France. He prevented any military alliance with France. His second concern was that Austria-Hungary and Russia posed a threat to peace. Bismarck’s solution was to keep Russia and Ausrtia-Hungary close to him to try and prevent any conflict. Russia thought the Ottoman Empire were the “sick man of Europe,” and was negative towards the empire. This worried Bismarck, because he wanted to maintain peace between two enemies, Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Bismarck’s efforts at the Conference of Berlin (1878), angered Russian nationalists which made Bismarck enter a military alliance with Austria against Russia. This alliance ultimately lasted until the end of World War I. Since Italy was on bad terms with France, they were motivated to join Germany. This created the Triple Alliance. Bismarck remained fearful about tensions…

Nationalism was a key factor in building nations. Throughout the years Italians were growing impatient and dissatisfied under foreign rule. Count Cavour was responsible for the brains behind the unification of Italy. He believed that releasing the Italians from foreign rule would not only leave the country authoritative and superb but also supply the people with intelligence and knowledge (Doc. 3). Italian Nationalists looked up to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia because of their power over the Italian states. In 1848, the kingdom had adopted a liberal constitution. So to the middle class liberals, unification under Piedmont Sardinia was appealing. Giuseppe Garibaldi, the leader of army of nationalists, captured Sicily. After marching across the Italian mainland their was an agreement to let the Sardinian king rule. Like Italy, Germany achieved national unity around the same time. The Austrian Empire took over the German confederation; however, Prussia was prepared to unify them. Prussia had a mainly German empire. Therefore, nationalism truly unified Prussia. When Bismarck took control, he was a master of realpolitik. Bismarck’s method for uniting Germany was through blood and iron (Doc 5). As governments experienced many revolutions and uprisings in the name of nationalism, some countries’ respective leaders realized that their traditional conservatism would eventually destabilize their authoritative legitimacy. Thus, leaders such as Otto von Bismarck adopted a new kind of conservatism, mixing both liberal, semi-socialistic and conservative policies in order to keep a balance that would ensure some stability in his state. For Otto von Bismarck, his international policies were more conservative; he promoted nationalism, unification, and state sovereignty. His domestic policies, however, were more liberal; he allowed for progressive social reforms and implemented separation of church and state.…

In the beginning there were imperial electors that ran the estates of East Germany and Prussia. When Frederick William came into power as the “Great Elector”, he was able to heavily tax the germanic lands without the consent from the nobles. Taxation allowed for strong dominance over land-owning classes and more importantly, the peasantry. This brought together the Prussian cities and eliminated noble power, thus making Frederick William the absolute ruler. As soon as his son, Frederick William I, came into power, he made sure that all taxation funds were funneled into military power. He transformed Prussia into a disciplined, skilled, military state that would answer to him only through noble commanders. He forced the peasants to fight in the army, and when retired, to provide for the Prussian army and state the agricultural necessities to keep the country going. John McKay exclaims that “with all mean harnessed to the war machine, Prussian civil society became rigid and highly disciplined,” (482). Ultimately, Frederick William and his son were able to ensure a highly absolutist rule through the use of taxes and military motivation. Compared to the Austrian power, the Prussian Empire had a strong foundation of military skill and poise, and continued to push their peasants to the brinking point of…
