Can you imagine a boy who got emotional, being timid, throwing tantrums, and talking back can ever get a Black Belt in Karate? When I was young, I watched Bruce Lee movies, and I wanted to become a martial artist, but, it is not possible to me since I was afraid of physical contact, getting hurt, or fighting with other people. Then one day, my dad got me a rebreakable board for practicing breaking boards and I could sometimes in one try to break it with my feet. After proving that I can break boards and overcoming my fear of getting hurt, I believe that I can become a martial artist. The Black Belt Test took 2 days. The first day lasted from noon to about 10pm, at West Valley College, and the second day lasted from 7am to 11pm, at San Jose City College (SJCC). I was a bit nervous and a lot confident of the Black Belt Test on my way to West Valley College. I am not sure if I’m going to pass the test or not. I’m nervous about breaking my boards because it is the hardest challenge. Furthermore, I was not sure if I’m going to receive my Black Belt. When I arrived at West Valley College, the organizers grouped the candidates with the same age, and the candidates sat down nervously while waiting for the Black Belt Test. The test started out with doing forms called, “Palgae 7.” There are a total of 23 movements. When the candidates are doing forms, they yelled out with lots of
energy and super loud! Examples of yelling out or ki-yapping like, “PEY!!!” or “AH YAH!!!” After doing forms, I got with a partner to do grappling. Grappling is a hand-to-hand combat. Some grappling techniques showed the candidates to escape. After grappling, I got with a partner again to do sticks called, “Single Sinawali” and “Double Sinawali.” Many candidates did the sticks fast to exercise their arms. Moreover, the sound of the sticks hitting each other is loud like clapping your hands. For board breaking, I felt excited about it. Board breaking means that you need to kick or punch through the board within ONLY 1 try. For sparring, it is about when 2 candidates fight each other, this is when candidates get hurt, but I still liked it! On the second day, I got up early even though I was tired on the previous day. I need to be ready for the rehearsal at San Jose City College. The most important part is the conditioning test, which was about many physical challenges that I have to overcome without quitting. In the Black Belt Ceremony (ending of the Black Belt Test), I felt super proud because I tried my best effort to get my Black Belt. With the can-do attitude, I can achieve everything 110% whatever I do. Finally, I became an Ernie Reyes Black Belt, and getting a Black Belt helped me changed my life for the better!! I learned that I can always get things done with the can-do attitude. I learned that whatever I do, I can put in 110% in my effort and never never ever quit!
