The main way the white southerners tried to limit the freedom of black slaves was by the use of the KKK. The white southerners tried to limit the freedom of African American was by the use of the Black Codes. The Black Codes were established by the white southerner to keep African American in lawful slavery as second class societies. The laws were formed generally to retain African Americans as an employer for a specific period of time. Black Codes controlled almost all features of life, and banned African American (Black Codes of Mississippi). Although the laws different from state to state, the main objective of the laws were the same to kept black in handcuffs. The codes controlled the public and legal rights, from marriage and sell property to determined meaning of black as agricultural labors (Civil Rights of Freedmen in Mississippi). In Section one of the law permits African American to rent property in cities and towns only if the local government gives them the right. They were not longer slaves, but they had no property, no money and little education. By denying African American the ability to own property, the legislature tries to guarantee that they would remain dependent workers.
