Black Lives Matter Protests on Black Friday

Last year, Black Friday saw protests everywhere from St. Louis to New York City; however, the demonstrators weren’t protesting Black Friday’s reach into Thanksgiving Day. Instead, they were turning to top retailers to protest the lack of an indictment in the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed, black teen from Ferguson.

Now, some shoppers are wondering if Black Friday 2015 could see similar protests from “Black Lives Matter” activists. Let’s take a closer look at last year’s protests to see what might hap-pen this year.

“Out of the Store, Into the Streets!”

The decision not to indict Darren Wilson, the officer who shot Brown, came just days before Black Friday. As a result, activists encouraged shoppers to boycott Black Friday to put economic pressure on the country. They hoped that economic pressure would bring political and

This kept the train from moving for several hours and other commuter trains were forced to find alternate routes. For a time, there was no service into or out of San Francisco. Several of the protesters responsible were arrested.

Some people opted to use social media to protest Black Friday. People used hashtags like #notonedime and #blackoutblackfriday to encourage shoppers to only visit black-owned businesses or to boycott the shopping holiday completely.

How About Black Friday 2015? The “Black Lives Matter” movement still has a strong presence in America. As early as last January, some activists were calling for protests and boycotts on Black Friday 2015. Given these facts, it seems possible that there could be boycotts and protests this year; however, they will likely be small-scale and in only in larger cities.

For the forth day over 300 people were apart of the sit-in. In little less than a week after the Greensboro sit-in started they were spreading all over the southern cities. The majority of these sit-ins remained peaceful, but there were some cases that turned violent. One of the sit-ins that became violent was the one in Chattanooga, TN; here a fight broke out between the blacks and whites. While the sit-ins continued the students began to boycott stores that had segregated lunch counters. Because of the boycotting sales dropped. Then after approximately $200,000 lost because of the boycotts, the store manager of Woolworths in Greensboro asked three black employees to go change from their work clothes and into the street clothes and order a meal from the counter. This event did not receive much publicity. From this the whole Woolworth was now desegregated and serving both blacks and whites the same. Other cities continued to be segregated until around…

It was sad to read on this subject, and I understood that Michael Brown, a black unarmed teenager was shot dead on August 9, 2014, by Darren Wilson, a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Therefore, many people came to protest this crime who do not believe it is fair that this happened. I also think it's not fair. The boy was unarmed and that there is not just killed this way. The official and had fired two shots and instead of taking the child to the hospital for his wounds heal and then prosecute or bring to trial. The policeman preferred to throw more bullets, he made the young life lost. Many people think this is because there is still racism, and among other things that discriminate against African Americans…

In conclusion, the death of Michael Brown caused racial tensions to grow, riots, and Ferguson to undergo destruction from the riots. It is not completely sure if the difference in race was the only reason for the shooting by Darren Wilson. By the predominately black community of Ferguson, it seems that way. However, it did not seem to be apparent to the Grand Jury that this was the reason behind it. They felt that Officer Wilson did what was necessary in the moment. With this decision, outrage swept into Ferguson and racial tension between whites and blacks…

As one of the largest grassroots movements in the country, Black Lives Matter is a reaction to the dehumanization of Black people, a call to action against societal and institutional racism, as well as a rebuild of the narrow, conventional liberation movements that too often marginalized women, queer, trans, disabled and undocumented immigrants from within the movement. As such, it does not limit its scope to the alarmingly high poverty, incarceration and extrajudicial killing rates, but it includes grievances specific to those that usually take the back seat in those movements. Black Lives Matter calls for society as a whole to end racial discrimination, to acknowledge the contribution of Black people to it, but also for Black folks and their…

In reference to allegations that the protests were precocious, Martin Luther King states several reasons why this was a suitable time for direct action. Originally, discussions with Birmingham's economic public did not give correct results and suppliers did not remove mortifying racial signs from the stores. This became one of the motives that led to the rally. The Easter holiday was the second major shopping season and was elected by the protesters for direct-exploit program because it was the best time to bring burden on the merchants. King explains that the action was stalled several times due to impending elections but demonstrators felt that the action could not be delayed any longer. Then, as Martin Luther King makes clear, protesters did not give a new Birmingham government time to react, because the newly elected Birmingham mayor Albert Boutwell was a segregationist just like his forerunner, Mr. Connor. Finally, King expresses that African Americans were waiting for this instant for more than 340 years and that it was more than sufficient.…

Boycotting, in a way, is a peaceful type of protest, but not as effective as others. In this time, boycotting could be effective, but could also damage, or seriously disrupt daily lives. If you were to boycott a major grocery store in the 1950s, it wouldn’t disrupt that many daily lives because many people back then grew their own food, but if you were to do that today, it would seriously disrupt people from getting their food so that they can feed their family, because many people depend on grocery stores in order to get their food consumption.…
