Argument and Evidence
Argument: Segregation is a huge part of this book and I think that the concept of racism is wrong and should not be used under any circumstances for any reason.
Evidence:
• Page 8-10: Mr. Griffin goes to visit Mr. Levitan and tries to see if he will help him publish the book he soon wants to make after his experiment. The experiment is to change his skin color to black and try to resolve discrimination with the black and white people. Mr. Levitan thinks this is a crazy idea and thinks he’s sure to get killed the second someone finds out about what he’s doing.
 This shows that it was extremely dangerous to try anything like this back in that time period because everyone was very pro-racism. I think it shouldn’t have to be dangerous to do this. I think it’s smart of him, in a way, because he’s trying to fix things that shouldn’t even be a problem. In other words, it shouldn’t be dangerous because everyone is the same no matter what skin color and this happened to be a problem back then.
• Page 124-131: Mr. Griffin is on the bus, in the back as usual, and two white women board and are unable to find a seat. The bus driver sees this and demands a young black man to move for them, but he refuses over and over again. Right at that time, a tall, buff, red-headed white man threatens to beat up the boy if he doesn’t move, yet he still refuses. The bus driver won’t let any “rough housing” go on and finally one of the women tell the bus driver that it’s okay and they don’t mind, feeling bad for being the cause of all the drama.
 This shows that it wasn’t even allowed for two of a different color to sit together. I think this is wrong because again, everyone is equal, but they didn’t know that in this time. When the white man offered to beat him up because he wouldn’t move it showed the pure hatred the white race had for the blacks, which is very wrong.

    Black Like Me was written by John Howard Griffin about his adventure in some southern states and what he observed when he pigmented his skin to be an African American; who at the time was being discriminated against. Throughout his experiment he experienced many things including racism, discrimination, and survival. Griffin was a privileged southern white from Texas. During the pigmentation process he set out for New Orleans, once the procedure was done completely, he seen things as a black man. The restaurants he went to as a white man did not tolerate the colored. He went to a shoe shiner who he had previously met as a white didn’t recognize him. Griffin then entrusted him with his secret about his experiment. He came by a couple days later and then began his journey to the other southern states, such as Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.…

    The next article, “Black Men and Public Space.”, is about a man, Brent Staples, coming home and following behind a white woman. He describes how scared the woman gets when she notices the man behind her and goes into great detail how race, gender, and class play a big role in society and government. Mr. Staples also gives a strong ethical statement. “As a softly who is scarcely able to take a knife to a raw chicken-let alone hold one to a person’s throat-I was surprised, embarrassed, and dismayed all at once.” The quote before states, “… it was in the echo of that terrified woman’s footfalls that I first began to know the unwieldy inheritance I’d come into-the ability to alter public space in ugly ways. It was clear that she thought herself the quarry of a mugger, a rapist, or worse. Suffering a bout of insomnia, however, I was stalking sleep, not defenseless wayfarers.” This quote and Brent Staples as well are trying to say that not all Negroes are rapist, let alone muggers, and that they can actually be treated as actual humans. The Scottsboro Trials took place in the 1930’s and consisted of nine ‘colored’ men accused of raping two white women on a train. Of course, since life wasn’t exactly fair for everyone during this time, the trials resulted in biased results. Plus, the jury selected, was made up entirely of white men who were clearly in favor of the two white women.     I agree with both of the authors that there is a problem in the United Sates education system when it comes to race and segregation but I do not think that the issue is as wide spread as the authors make it out to be but in other areas the situation is only getting worse and this lack of diversity in schools can only lead to further problems with race relations. In comparing the essay Still Separate, still unequal: American’s Educational Apartheid by Johnathan Kozol and the essay Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria by Beverly Tatum you see that both essays have many similarities and differences in the points that they are trying to convey as well as the conclusions that each of the essays come to. Each essay presents different problems in the education system in the United States with racial equity, such as the point being raised by Kozol that many schools in major cities across the country are all but segregated; but they also show that there is some potential in fixing the education system.…

This statement the author of this book gives, John Howard Griffin, essentially gives the reader a taste of what to expect in this book. Black Like Me is a nonfiction book by John Howard Griffin telling his adventure that he made in the deep south of the United States. He made this adventure during the time African-Americans faced discrimination and racism. Griffin goes through a procedure to have his skin temporarily darken to blend in the black community. He embarked this journey as a transformed black man for six weeks throughout the southern states which included Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas. Griffin is being funded to do this project by Sepia Magazine. In exchange, Sepia will be given rights by Griffin to print his experiences as a series of articles. This book has received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award.…

    These photos show how dangerous it was to be an African American trying to become something during Jim Crow America. If you wanted to be anything more then a free slave you would be hunted down by the Ku Klux Klan and lynched. Although it was against the law, it seemed to have become socially acceptable because people were sending these pictures as postcards. Also, hangings were a spectacle. In many of the photos large groups of people crowed around to watch and stare at the bodies. These events were so open and public that even little girls attended them as seen in one of the photos. Most people that were in the pictures in the background and posing were whites. Even though while performing a lynching most people were masked, no one wore masks while going to look at one. This is because it was against the law and the people who preformed the lynchings didn’t want to be recognized since most of them were upstanding members of society, even police officers. It was not however, a bad thing to go see the aftermath of the lynching. This was because it was something many people were proud of. The notes on the postcards shoed that people were proud of this and that they wanted it to be seen. It is also seen in the pictures that not only were they hanged but burned, shot, and beaten. We chose this scene because not only is it a historical concept, it still has the relevance in regards to the present time as well.     I learned many new things from this video. I learned that many people died in the black’s non-violent revolution for freedom and rights. I also learned that most African Americans were paid an average of only about $700. African Americans were denied education at all white schools, and were only allowed a less than average education at black schools. Under the Supreme Court ruling in Brown vs. Board of Education, a number of African American Honors students integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Every day they had to endure abuse from a huge angry mob that protested integration and wanted segregation. I feel that I would not have been able to put up with all that abuse. Those nine students that integrated Central High had great determination and never gave up hope. I also learned that it was a very long and hard struggle for all blacks during the Civil Rights Movement. The KKK terrorized blacks and killed them. Many African Americans were killed before they won the rights that they deserve. I was very proud of all the African Americans that participated in things like the Montgomery bus boycott because it showed that they weren’t afraid of standing up for themselves. I felt joyful that they always had the courage to stay non-violent, because if they turned to violence, the situation would not have turned out the same way.
