After the civil war, these types of plays were not generally that popular. These plays showed newly freed African Americans that they still had not won this war yet. Yet they were just embarking upon a new war for equality

The coon caricature is one of the most insulting of all anti-black caricatures. The name itself, an abbreviation of raccoon, is dehumanizing. As with Sambo, the coon was portrayed as a lazy, easily frightened, chronically
