Black Swan Green
There are so many things in life that people wish they could change, but that wouldn’t solve anything. Life is a rollercoaster, you never know what to expect or how you will react to what’s in store. In the book, Black Swan Green by David Mitchell, Jason Taylor is a teenager who goes through many and deals with many obstacles that he wish he could change in his life. He deals with bullying, his case of stammering, trying to find somewhere to belong and writing to help him find peace of mind. There are many discoveries that are unleashed in Black Swan Green, that illustrate how you have to try and make the best out of what you have. Jason deals with a speech impediment called stammering. Stammering is a speech disorder that involves hesitations and involuntary repetitions of certain sounds. Of course, by having this speech impediment this triggers bullying from other teenagers as well as family members. “Honestly, Helena, when are you going to get rid of his stutter? It’s social suicide!”(Pg29) Spoken by his Aunt Clara. Like any normal kid, having to deal with people judging you would make you want to change who you are, become someone else who everyone will want to talk to and not talk about. Having a stammer makes Jason feel lonely. Nobody really ever has anything positive or encouraging to say about his disorder, its just “ ‘kids turned around to stare at Gary Drake, then me. Is Taylor the school stutterer going to cry?’ A label’d been stuck on me that I’ll never peel off.” (Pg209). Jason desires a life outside of this predicament stammering causes. To be able to fit in, not feel alone is all he wants. Jason’s family isn’t a typical family who supports their members and wants to help them be the best that they are. They talk about him, tease him, make comments that aren’t the nicest which can make people become bottled up, not want to express their true emotions. Jason’s Aunt
