Black Youth Citizenship
The focus of Dr. Jagers’ study was Black youths and civic development. The purpose of the study was to promote the growth of Black youths because their group is at a greater risk of “under-realized potential, problem behaviors and constrained long-term life chances” all because of the “social, political and economic inequities” in the contexts of domestic and international (Jagers, 2017). So, due to the oppression and challenges Black youths faced, the study recruited youths to participate in activities, such as participating in community services or summer programs, in order to promote the youths’ civic development while also exemplifying their active citizenship. There are different types of citizenship that demonstrate the type of character an individual is and can be influenced by different stimulus, which was interesting to learn. As Dr. Jagers mentioned, there is citizen-consumer, global citizen, personally responsible citizen, participatory citizen, and justice-oriented citizen. So, through this discussion of the type of citizenship, it made me wonder what type of citizen I am and whether citizenships can be limited to only these five types. It seemed like the categories of citizenship is quite narrow because there only five types and there is possibility that some individuals do not fit into any of the categories or fit into more than one type. Therefore, the presentation provided insight into factors that may influence civic development in Black youths who are at the lower end of society in terms of social, political, and economic. Black youths also have the ability like other races to realize their potential and chances, but cannot because they do not have the resources. So, the study attempt to promote the growth of a healthy, well-functioning Black adolescent by recruiting youths to participate in different activities that incorporated civic behavior and analyzing oppression. Thus, the study made an effort to further research oppression and injustice in society, inquire different factors that influence civic development, and applying the stimulus on participants. In the study, it provided an example of a project, Wolverine Pathways, which was designed for youths to develop appropriate exposure and cultivate interest. Approximately 700 students participated in the program and it was structured around project/inquiry-based learning, internships and capstone projects, and mixed-method research in order to “increase students’ academic, social, and cultural preparation for civic life in college, community and global contexts” (Jagers, 2017).
