Very little is known about Blackbeard’s early life although he is thought to have been born in Bristol England sometime around 1680.
It is believed that he was a privateer or sailor during Queen Anne’s War and settled on the Bahamian island of New Provence around 1716, New Provence was a base for the pirate Captain, and eventually pirate hunter Benjamin Hornigold. Edward joined Hornigold’s crew and was placed in command of a ship that they had captured; they engaged in numerous acts of piracy and quickly became feared and notorious pirates. They were only together for about 2 years before Hornigold retired from piracy, at this point Edward (Blackbeard) took over as captain of the pirate gang.

As divulged to the reader, Billy Budd takes place in 1797 in the midst of the French Revolution. Throughout the mid- 1790s, Britain enacted new quota requirements to enlist 45,000 men in the Royal Navy, which was filled by means of volunteers, the Quota Acts, and most popularly, the impressing of men from merchant ships, as Melville demonstrates. Actual events that occurred in April and May of 1797 were the Spithead and Nore Mutinies, these incidents were offset by the despicable onboard conditions, the severe punishments and increasingly sparse pay while at sea. The pitying British government met the demands of the sailors at the Spithead mutiny; however, the mutinous sailors at the Nore were not so easily won over. Richard Parker was the ringleader behind the plan to not succumb to the government immediately and hold out longer. With this occurrence fresh in mind, it was of Captain Vere’s best intention to prevent mutiny aboard the Bellipotent.…

The Tales of the Black Freighter was a popular pirate comic series in the fictional “Watchmen” universe. It was written by Max Shea, whose popularity began with the thirty issue pirate series and continued into his novel writing career. “Marooned,” a two-part storyline, was the most popular story from the series. In the Watchmen, a youth named Bernard read the second half of the first issue and the second issue on a New York street corner. The story detailed a mariner marooned by the pirates of the Black Freighter, who becomes obsessed with returning to his home of Davidstown to warn of the impending pirate attack. After he built a raft made of fallen shipmates, he slowly descended into madness on his journey back. After braving the ocean and its perils, he arrived back to his hometown in a daze, culminating in a disturbing twist of fate. The major events of this story parallel the same struggles and…

The black legend was the name given to the concept of cruelty and brutality spread by the Spanish during the 14th and 15th century. It can be said to be an anti-Spanish movement, which was started due to political and religious torment done by the Spanish on the people. It was the dominance and control of the Spanish over Europe that lead to the black legend of the Spanish. It was through this particular propaganda that the people were able to understand how various European countries had fallen prey to Spanish cruelty and misconduct. They were being religiously and politically divided just because of the supreme power that the Spanish held at the time. They wanted to stand tall as a nation and wanted to develop and advance together. They were not willing to lose their heritage, cultural values and spiritual beliefs to the hands of the Spanish cruelty and nastiness.…

Henry Hudson was an English explorer, who sailed along the North East coast of North American. His early life is unknown, for there is not even a record of the year he was born. His final days are a mystery, after his mutinous crew set him adrift in the bay that bears his name, June 1611. It is believed that he could have been the grandson of a London alderman who helped found the Muscovy Company, which is a trading company. Hudson took four voyages beginning in 1607 and continued to1611, making claims for the English and the Dutch. At one point, he was arrested for working with the Dutch, because in those days working for another country was considered treason. Hudson was also known as the grandfather of the English whaling industry, because he discovered pods of whales at Spitzbergen Island.…

Herman Melville wrote the novel “Billy Budd” during the 19th century. Melville had several experiences at sea taking part in whaling voyages and also joined a crew while trying to get back home. On this voyage home, he and the rest of the ship’s crew were accused of mutiny and thrown in jail for several months. Some of Melville’s personal experiences as a sailor described in the background makes his story more interesting to the reader. In the novel “Billy Budd”, Melville’s usage of foreshadowing keeps the reader intrigued by the words he uses to portray Billy Budd, multiple details surrounding mutiny, and the reference to a serpent.…
