Part 1
The hitches in the production department had to be addressed as soon as possible. Customers had to be guaranteed that product quality would not be compromised. The issue of high pressure in the Greasex cans had to be solved for the last time. My first step would be to make a quality statement and issue it across the affected departments. My first contact shall be the manufacturing manager. I shall outline to him the need for a replacement of some of the equipment currently in use and the need to make sure that the material used was of the best quality. As the director of quality assurance, I shall proceed to create a blueprint. The blueprint shall be the guiding framework for the changes I would like to see. Such changes would include the replacement of defective machinery, and the creation of a quality-oriented attitude in all the key departments.
To solve these problems, I shall require information. Primarily, I shall need information on alternative manufacturers of the filling head so that we could find a suitable replacement. Another vital piece of information would be to find out from the product design and packaging department whether it was possible to design the Greasex cans in a different way other than the contour design. I shall also require information from the Manager on the possibility of replacing all defective machinery. This shall include information on whether the financial standing of the company can allow for servicing or replacement of the filling equipment. This information would be very important in helping me chart an effective and informed course of action. With this information, I shall have several alternatives to choose from, the first will be to create an organizational transformation oriented towards observing quality. Second will be to call for the replacement or servicing of defective machinery and my last alternative will be to have them design a different type of can that will not cause problems and seek

There are four main issues that have resulted in major company problems. The first is the resiliency of the company culture. Problems such as low productivity cannot be properly addressed unless the culture is capable of changing to promote the necessary changes. The second major cause is the inability to monitor and measure performance. Thirdly, the company has not properly determined who needs what training. In addition, the mechanics’ past injuries have contributed to absenteeism. Finally, the old fleet of buses is unreliable and has left passengers stranded or caused them to be late.…

Our firm is the producer of tangible products. We, as a company, must ensure that we are delivering the highest quality products to our customers to maintain a quality reputation and in order to earn repeat and referral business. We have identified the three types of costs associated with the implementation of quality considerations. We believe that if we are mindful of the following costs our quality will improve, our customer satisfaction will improve and our business will prosper. The three types of costs associated with quality considerations are prevention costs, appraisal costs, internal and external failure costs. Prevention costs are the most effective way to avoid unnecessary problems with production and sales quality. These costs are defined as any steps we as a company can take to pre-emptively avoid any future defects by providing our employees with things such as, proper tools to complete their assigned work, safe and proper working conditions, proper and effective training of all new employees and continual training and education for all existing employees, and by implementing quality control systems to ensure all products produced are up to the company’s and customer’s quality standards. Appraisal costs are the costs associated with the testing and inspection of purchased materials used in the productions process, inspection of the items the company is producing, checking items produced for conformance, quality control audits and field testing of items produced and the cost of the labor associated with all of these items. These costs are ultimately the quality costs resulting from quality control and while they may be high in numbers but are imperative during the manufacturing and production processes. Internal failure costs are the costs that we would incur should we fail to meet the quality standards of the…

Ron Garcia felt good about his first week as a management trainee at Mexicana Wire Winding, Inc. He had not yet developed any technical knowledge about the manufacturing process, but he had toured the entire facility, located in the suburbs of Mexico City, and had met many people in various areas of the operation. Mexicana, a subsidiary of Westover Wire Works, a Texas firm, is a medium-sized producer of wire windings used in making electrical transformers. Carlos Alverez, the production control manager, described the windings to Garcia as being of standardized design. Garcia’s tour of the plant, laid out by process type (see Figure 7.20), followed the manufacturing sequence for the windings: drawing, extrusion, winding, inspection, and packaging. After inspection, good product is packaged and sent to finished product storage; defective product is stored separately until it can be reworked. On March 8, Vivian Espania, Mexicana’s general manager, stopped by Garcia’s office and asked him to attend a staff meeting at 1:00 P.M. “Let’s get started with the business at hand,” Vivian said, opening the meeting. “You all have met Ron Garcia, our new management trainee. Ron studied operations management in his MBA program in southern California, so I think he is competent to help us with a problem we have been discussing for a long time without resolution. I’m sure that each of you on my staff will give Ron your full cooperation.” Vivian turned to José Arroyo, production control manager. “José, why don’t you describe the problem we are facing?” “Well,” José said, “business is very good right now. We are booking more orders than we can fill. We will have some new equipment on line within the next several months, which will take care of our capacity problems, but that won’t help us in April. I have located some retired employees who used to work in the drawing department, and I am planning to bring them in as temporary employees in April to…

To realize these benefits, management must develop some specific methods that, when implemented, will lead to the achievement of the desired objective. A plant manager, for example, may start a supplier evaluation program to identify and select suppliers who are willing and able to supply defect-free parts. Empowered workers may be able to identify production causes of defects and create new methods for producing a product that will reduce scrap and rework and the need for inspection. The new methods should be clearly specified and detailed.…

The Sprouses began acting at the age of eight months following a suggestion from their grandmother, Jonine Booth Wright, who was a drama teacher and actress.[14] The twins first appeared in a commercial for diapers, switching on-screen time every few seconds.[15] As with many twins, the two have often played the same role, due to child labor laws in California restricting the amount of time children can be filmed in a day. Casting twins in a single role thus allows more time for the character to be filmed.[16] Beginning at eight months old, the two played a single character, Patrick Kelly, on the ABC series Grace Under Fire.[17][18]…
