Biome Survival Activity
Plane Crash Incident Report:
Your small plane crashed in your biome approximately 150 miles from the nearest town. The pilot was killed in the crash, but you and one other passenger survived. It is January and the temperature is average for that area during that time of year. You need to survive until help arrives. You do not know when help will arrive and you must stay at or within 500 feet of the crash site.
The plane is completely wrecked, but the following items are scattered around the crash site:
☼ compass ☼ 7 newspapers
☼ a small amount of steel wool ☼ hatchet
☼ map of the area ☼ pistol with 10 bullets
☼ can of vegetable oil ☼ 6 chocolate bars
☼ 6 m x 6 m tarp ☼ 4 shirts and 4 pairs of pants
☼ 1 cigarette lighter ☼ 1 quart of rubbing alcohol
☼ 1 gallon of drinkable water ☼ 1 quart of bleach
☼ a mirror ☼ 30 feet of nylon rope

Group Task: our CRASH SITE (Biome): Temperate Rainforest
1. (7 Points) Describe, in detail, what the area is like.
Its an area of heavy rainfall. The temperature is cold in January (44 fahrenheit). The trees are all evergreen coniferous trees. It also has huntable game.
2. (4 Points) List 2 plant species that are found in your biome and why they will be useful to you.
There are cedar, spruces, hemlocks, and douglas fir. They can provide shelter. You can also use them for firewood.
3. (4 Points) List 2 animal species that are found in your biome and why they will be useful to you.
There are squirrels, deer, elk, and birds. If you hunt them they can provide a source of food. You can also use them for their fur.

    Being a coniferous area of woodland the main tree species are: pine, larch, birch and spruce. Some of these trees (spruce and pine) are adapted to the climate by having smaller, prickly leaves with waxy cuticles to reduce water loss and do not defoliate in winter.
