The movie of The Blind Side attempted to mimic the book as much as possible, however there were noticeable choices that the director made that changed the presentation of the movie compared to the picture that the book created. One of the main choices was to cut out a lot of the football facts that were presented in the book. Throughout the book, numerous chapters were dedicated to talking about the history of the importance of the left tackle and other players in the game, but in the movie, almost all of those scenes were cut out. This made the movie move faster unlike the book which was slow moving at times.…
Through Deaf Eyes is a film outlining deaf history and deaf culture. The movie touches on many key milestones in deaf American’s lives including: community interactions, education, recreation and work. While we have been learning much on deaf history, I was fascinated to hear the many obstacles deaf people had to overcome to reach where they are today. I am one to always route for the underdog and to me the deaf community’s history is a wonderful example of a minority persevering to achieve set goals and dreams. Being ‘partially sighted’- Workers at ‘Happy Valley Special School’ or assistants who work there could help Samir in many different ways they could copy down from the board for him because he is partially sighted. Also teachers/workers at ‘Happy Valley School’ should ensure that Samir is wearing his glasses on during all lessons and they should also make sure that he is as close to the board as possible. Another thing that will help would be to make Samir sit as close to the speaker/teacher as possible so help is always available at hand.…

Reading Oliver Sacks’ case “To See and Not See”, about a man named Virgil, gives me a new and interesting perspective on blindness. I have a friend who is partially deaf. She and I communicate with visual cues and our communication is helped by the fact that she can hear some sound and can read lips. In contrast, I cannot say I have had an occasion to spend time with a non-sighted person. For decades, Deaf student’s reading levels have been consistently lower than their hearing peers, despite multiple interventions being implemented to target this issue. Over the years Deaf education has adopted teaching methods hoping to increase the test results of the students in all areas including their reading and writing scores. So far, research has not been able to pinpoint a cause to why Deaf students’ results are lower than hearing students on average.
