The Blind Side-October 13,2010 “The Blind Side” On November 20, 2009, a great movie was brought forth for the world to see! “The Blind Side” is a 2009 drama-sports film written and directed by John Lee Hancock. However, it is based on the 2006 book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis. With the movie starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, and Quinton Aaron, this movie became an instant hit in the box office. This two-hour and nine minute tear-jerker is a great family film. The Blind Side gives a clear depiction of Michael Oher’s upbringing to his rise to stardom. At the age of seven, Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) was separated from his drug-addicted mom and was tossed from foster home to foster home throughout Memphis, Tennessee. A door had finally opened for Michael when his friend’s father got him accepted to a private Christian school in the suburbs of Memphis. Despite his horrible grades, he was admitted and placed on the football team. One night after a Thanksgiving play, Leigh Ann Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) sees Michael in the rain, shivering in the cold. She offers him a place to sleep for the night. That one night began the rest of his life! The Tuohy family immediately welcomes Michael into their home and family. Sean Tuohy Sr. (Tim McGraw) and Leigh Ann gained guardianship of Michael and got him on the straight and narrow path. Because he became an instant hit on the football field, it was imperative that he raised his grade point average to a 2.5 to be eligible for NCAA Division I scholarships. The Tuohy’s then hired a tutor. With the help of Michael’s teachers and his tutor, he graduated high school with a 2.52 grade point average with a full-ride to Ole Miss University where the Tuohy’s had also attended. Subsequently, Michael Oher was drafted in the NFL by the Baltimore Ravens in the first-round. This film can easily be compared to Lean on Me.
