Blizzard: A Fictional Narrative
I slowly woke up one frigid morning, dreading having to do work for my family as always. I could tell there was something unusual about this morning, though. It was significantly colder than normal. I got out of my bed and, ordinarily, looked through my window. I saw nothing but a tremendous amount of snow falling, though I could barely see two feet outwards. I realized this was a blizzard, and, moreover, I started to panic. I’ve heard there was going to be a blizzard, but I didn’t think it would hit us. I went upstairs and went into my brother’s room. He was still asleep so I rapidly shook his arm to wake him up.
“Cobalt, wake up! There’s a blizzard!” I shouted.
“Huh? Let me see,” he replied.
He got out of bed and walked over to the nearest

Peter Stark’s article As Freezing Persons Recollect The Snow—First Chill—Then Stupor—Then The Letting go: the cold hard facts of freezing to death talks and explains what happens to the human body when a person is freezing to death but it also gives an enjoyable story for the reader. The character in this story is in his way to a friend’s house for dinner and night cross country ski when his jeep slides off the road and gets stuck in a snow bank. Stark made it clear that his character was not panicked at first but just simply worried about missing the dinner with his friends. Not wanting to miss his plans the character puts his skis on, looks at the map, and heads to the cabin on top of the hill. While this story is unfolding Stark includes scientific data about the lowest core temperature a human can have before perishing. The character wants to save time by going up the steep hill instead of following the road that has many switch backs this is when everything starts to go wrong. The character goes for about an hour with no sign of the road, while assessing the map he hears a metallic pop and a piece of his binding has popped out. The character is trying to find the piece of his binding and while he does this his body temperature begins to lower after finding the piece his core temperature has lowered a substantial amount. The character has now started to panic and decides to go back to the jeep and its warmth on his way down he falls and lands pretty hard and he is feeling very tired so decides to rest. The rest of the story goes on with him losing and gaining conciseness but his body is too weak to get up and move on and more data about core temperatures and hypothermia. The friends find the character in the snow half naked but he isn’t dead he has a faint heart beat so they take him to the hospital and the doctor brings up his core temperature. The character survives.…

This serves as a dual purpose as a physical and emotional barrier of the struggle of living in a post-apocalyptic world. The cloud of ash also has the capability to cause drastic climate changes, more importantly a severe change in temperature dropping in a “nuclear winter” (s4). The experience of “the gathering cold” creates a bleak world in which the father only reason for being is to protect his son (McCarthy 59). The cold arises problems of how to survive from the freezing chills, however, it also includes that even with no one around and no warmth from the outside environment, the affection between the father and the son creates a strong relation to continue their survival in a barren world. It shows the true meaning of family, that even with a harsh and bitter life experience, the love between family allows one to overcome the problems faced. The cold possesses a unique ability for survival in the book as it…

In the beginning of the story, he was arrogant and didn’t care about what the weather was like, even when the old timer told him that when it’s fifty below, travel with a partner. “The mysterious, far-reaching hairline trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all -- made no impression on the man”(1). During the middle of the story, he found himself getting frustrated. “He had never experienced such cold, walking he rubbed his cheek-bones and nose, and the following instant the end of his nose went numb”(3). Soon he started to realize that he should’ve listened to the old timer. Towards the end, when he finally grasped that he was going to freeze to death, he was first fearful of dying, but then panic started to set in. Which made him run around in a frenzy to keep his warmth. But after a while, he comprehended that, that wasn’t going to help, so he calmed himself. “He was bound to freeze anyway, and he might as well take it decently. With his new found peace if mind came the first of drowsiness. A good idea, he thought, to sleep off to…

It’s being outside past midnight on a winter night. It’s a secret - it’s something we’re not supposed to see. The sky is purple but it’s also white. And why is it so bright out? The streetlamps mix the colors into a dynamic palate, with a hint of bronze. And the snowflakes the snowflakes the snowflakes. They’re frozen. Yes they are literally frozen water but that’s not what I mean. It’s chaos but if you look closer it’s not chaos. Look up. Look closer - they’re suspended in thin air, but every time you exhale they start falling again. It’s hushed. It’s a secret. You’re not supposed to look. You’re supposed to wake up the next morning and look outside while you’re making coffee and think, “Huh. Maybe they’ll cancel classes today”.…

As I crossed the road with my dog Henry, I could feel the frigid winter breeze on my face. Then I felt a snowflake land on my nose like a plane landing after a long flight. I didn’t like this cold weather at all but I had heard many children around me cheering and laughing. I heard things like “woohoo it is snowing” and things like “oww don't throw snowballs at my face”. That last one made me chuckle a little bit when I had heard it. Then I heard someone yell my name, which is Brian by the way. So I turned around and felt a big snowball hit my back.…

We had another dust storm yesterday. It was pretty bad. It was around 1:30 that it happened. I was outside when I saw it coming. I rushed inside and screamed, Dust Storm! Dad rushed inside from sealing one of the windows. Mom stopped cleaning clothes, and poured all of the water on any cloth that she could find. Then she hung them up on the inside of the window to catch any dust that came in. Dad went into his room and came back with some masks to put on and protect us from the dirt that we might have breathed in. We huddled up in the center of the house and waited for the dust to hit. When it did it sounded like an explosion. It immediately got dark. I wasn’t sure if it was from the storm or if it was just me closing my eyes. There darkness stayed for only a couple of minutes but it felt like an hour. When the storm finally ended we looked around. The house was covered in dust. It got a little bit brighter but not by much.…

I have a lot of family members that live in Jersey so, my grandparents and I would take the three or four hour trip up to Egg Harbor. I always remembered going through the Fort McHenry tunnel. I when I was younger I thought that there were trains inside the tunnel. That’s obviously not true, but I remembered seeing these “trains” so vividly that I was convinced that they were real. One time when we went to their house it had snowed a lot. And he plows had piled up the snow really high. At the time it probably looked like a sky rise building. But, I didn’t remember snow clothes. Of course that didn’t stop my cousin and I. So my cousin, sister, and I are playing in ten foot piles of filthy snow at 9:00 PM. It’s pitch black, my pants at this point are soaked and my legs are about to freeze off. I vaguely remember someone getting hurt,…

Blizzard in the District of Columbia area last January cause many problems such as no transportation, school closed, and people stacked. First, there was no transportation at all almost for three days because the road was very slippery and it was difficult to drive at that time. Due to this problem people forced to stay home for those days and their income decrease for that month. Second, the school closed for almost three to four days because there was no school bus and the weather was extremely cold. It was a risk to go to school on that condition. This problem causes people to stay home with their children since they cannot leave their children alone in their home by themselves unless they are older than fifteen years old, so one of the family members should have to stay with them.…

A Day in the Life It’s early morning, well before the eyelids of the day have opened. A familiar noise I’ve heard many times before, brings my mind out of its unconsciousness and back into the real world. I assume it must be sometime around six in the morning, based on similar experiences. I can hear the sound of something small fumbling around on the other side of my bedroom door across the hallway. The sound is sneaking in from a space between where the bottom of the door should meet the carpeting of my bedroom floor. Mornings that begin like this one make me wish I had thought twice about removing the carpeting to expose the bare hardwood floors, only for the pleasure I thought it might bring to my eyes. If only I had known at the time, I would be giving up many mornings of undisturbed sleep. I reluctantly poke my head out from under the burrows I somehow seemed to create in the midst of my deep sleep that chilly night. I hear the sound again, a little bit louder this time. I lay there, head barely protruding out from the warmness contained under my 900 thread count sheets and the down comforter I had purchased, in fear that one day global warming would unexpectedly reverse, and the environment with which I was accustomed to would freeze over without warning. Having been forced to fully open my eyes, I now can see there are no signs of light creeping in through any spaces around the shades. The sounds continue for a while until the day finally begins, for someone else. I can hear her doorknob click when she turns it to open her bedroom door. I can hear the morning greeting she gives to her faithful companion who waited so patiently for her to awake. Overly excited about seeing his loving companion, he quickly pants and snorts with excitement, almost sounding out of breath. She follows him down the hall into the dining room where he leaps at the sliding door excited to finally be allowed to relieve himself from the past 9 hours of having to keep from…

The morning of December 17 I was eating breakfast on an outdoor patio at the hotel, enjoying the view and the food obviously. I was watching a few children playing on the beach when I saw the wave coming. I didn’t react as fast as I should because like everyone else I was just watching it as if it was something nice coming at me. Ironically though it wasn’t as nice as I thought. I started running when it was a little too late and I think the people at the hotel thought the same. Everybody was running away from the wave but no one knew were to run or how to save themselves. I was running hysterically but there was no way I could outrun the wave, that’s when I saw a man waving at me from the top of a huge building, so I darted in there. I climbed up to the roof and sat there to let the catastrophe do what it’s good at. While I was sitting there I saw the most horrific things happen in front of me, people fighting the water and screaming for help, children crying, houses exploding from the water and trees just falling down. The resort that was once so beautiful was nothing like itself. Buildings that were once homes and hotels were now wreckage.…

Minutes later, I felt a sudden tremble. A ray of sunshine hit my face as I opened my eyes. The shaking ended once I opened my eyes and I fell asleep once more. Again, there was a tremble and it kept on recurring. Every time the room shaked, the tremble was harder. I was scared. I went outside my room and went to the kitchen first. Everything was fallen including the stove and the fridge. I ran into my parents room crying. I could not see them in their space. I was more than thrilled. My heart stopped for a second. I directly went into my sibling’s room. My siblings were not there, except my 6 months old sister. I screamed and shouted like a mad cow. My lungs hurt. They pained, but I continued to shout. I picked up my sister and ran out in the streets. I was wearing my ugly nightdress. I ran in the streets. Everything seemed destroyed. All houses broken with cement pieces toppling the floor. The trains crashed on twisted railroads. It was like World War III to me, or perhaps the end of…
