Assignment
UNESCO Research, Part 1
Purpose of Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to prepare students for their final project. Students will determine the topic of their final project and possible references to use.
Resources Required: Appendix A; UNESCO website
Approach this project from the perspective of someone searching for funding to support preservation programs.
Review the ecological properties that are displayed on the World Heritage in Danger List on the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) website at http://whc.unesco.org/en/danger
Choose a property that you would be interested in supporting. This is the topic for your final paper. Note: Some places on the World Heritage in Danger list are not natural properties. Do not use cultural, archeological, or architectural sites for this project.
Research at least three references about the property in addition to the UNESCO website.
Write a two-sentence summary for each reference, describing how the resource will be helpful for their Final Project (e.g., what sort of content does the resource provide?).
Create a reference list of all references. Make sure to use APA format. Note that in order to be in APA format, the citation typically includes author (author may be the organization), publication year, title of work (or title of web page), journal name and volume # (or web site address). Please see the UofP library for more information regarding APA format. Only partial credit will be given if APA format is not used. For example, if only the web address is provided for one reference, then the student will receive one out of four possible points for that reference.
Include the appropriate rubric.
Post the name of the property, the summaries, the reference list, and the rubric as a single Microsoft ® Word attachment to the Assignment section on ecampus by Day 2 (Tuesday).

Assignment
The Building Blocks of Life Worksheet
Purpose of Assignment: Students learn why mitosis and meiosis are important to living organisms. Students also address when an organism would need to undergo mitosis and meiosis and what would happen if meiosis did not occur. This assignment also helps students organize their knowledge of cellular respiration and photosynthesis. The terminology of the processes and reactions is complex. Completing the matrix aids students in understanding the key components involved in acquiring and using energy.
Resources Required: Chapter 5 of BioInquiry; “Mitosis” Video; “Meiosis” Video; “Comparing Mitosis and Meiosis” video; Appendix C: Building Blocks of Life Worksheet
Complete Appendix C: Building Blocks of Life Worksheet, located on the student website.
Follow the directions provided in the worksheet.
Include a reference list, consistent with APA guidelines, at the end of the worksheet document, followed by the appropriate rubric. Rubrics are found in the Course Materials forum.
Post your worksheet as a Microsoft® Word attachment to the Assignment section on ecampus by Day 5 (Friday).
