Blood Glucose Regulation Lab
LABORATORY REPORT
Activity:

Blood Glucose Regulation

Name:

Jazmine Ricine Parham

Instructor:

Professor Deno

Date:

12.03.2014

Predictions
Plasma glucose levels will be highest immediately after the meal (0 hr)
Plasma ketone levels will be highest
1-3 hours after the meal
Plasma insulin levels will be highest immediately after the meal (0 hr)
Plasma glucagon levels will be highest before the meal (fasting)

Materials and Methods
Dependent Variable plasma levels of glucose, ketones, insulin, and glucagon
Independent Variable food and beverage intake
Controlled Variables physical activity, caffeine and alcohol intake, gender, age, BMI
4. Why were physical activity and caffeine and alcohol intake the controlled variables?
These variables were controlled because any change in them would have greatly effected the DV and IV and the whole outcome of the experiment. 5. What type of assay was used to measure plasma glucose and ketone levels?
Enzymatic analysis was used to measure plasma glucose and ketone levels.
6. What type of assay was used to measure plasma insulin and glucagon levels?
Radioimmunoassay was used to measure plasma and insulin and glucagon levels.

Diabetes mellitus is a condition created by the inadequate secretion of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that allows your body to use carbohydrates or store them for future use. Inadequate amounts of insulin causes a condition called hyperglycemia, which is an excessive amount of glucose in the blood stream. When the blood is filtered through the kidney, a large of amount of glucose is retained in the filtrate and a large amount of it cannot be reabsorbed and is excreted out as urine. The large amount of glucose within the filtrate changes the osmotic pressure within the nephron, which reduces the amount of water that is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. The sample with diabetes mellitus should hypothetically result in the sample of urine turning orange after 10 drops of Benedict’s Solution was added and the sample was heated. The sample turning orange after the Benedict’s Test was done on the sample would mean that the sample tested positive for…

Dictionary.com describes compassion as a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering (2012). Bush describes compassion fatigue as a complex emotion that allows caregivers to hold and sustain themselves in emotional balance while holding patients’ despair in one hand and their hopefulness in the other (2009). Being able to identify the warning signs, know the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of you as a caregiver, and knowing different coping skills and ways to deal with the stressors of juggling life’s activities can help us as caregivers to keep ourselves in balance.…

In the present time, the rate of proliferation of diabetic people is continuously and rapidly increasing. Further studies show that the number of diabetes cases worldwide has doubled since 1980 and is now at startling 350 million diabetics. (Laino, 2011). Diabetes is a lifelong disease in which the level of glucose in the blood is abnormally high. Connected to this is a condition called hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is the technical term for high blood glucose (sugar). High blood glucose occurs when the body can’t produce sufficient amount of insulin. And also, it can happen when the body can’t use insulin properly. (American Diabetes Association, 1995). In addition, Hyperglycemia is the major cause of complications with diabetes. If left untreated, hyperglycemia can become severe and lead to serious complications requiring emergency care, such as diabetic coma. In the long term, persistent hyperglycemia, even if not severe can lead to complications affecting your eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart. (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2012)…
