Insulin:
Insulin is a protein hormone that facilitates the transfer of glucose from the blood into cells.
Insulin lowers blood sugar by stimulating the liver to store glucose as glycogen.
The release of insulin is nutrient-regulated – it is typically released after a meal.
Glucagon:
The release of glucagon is nutrient-related; typically released when blood sugar drops, during times between meals. (HINT: Think glucose-gone for glucagon.)
Glucagon stimulates the liver to break down glycogen into glucose and release it back into the blood stream.
Glucagon signals cells to lower their metabolism, which helps conserve available glucose.
Diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes – genetic disorder, body is unable to produce insulin.
