Bloom 's Taxonomy of Education and its use in Nursing Education
There are many types of learning styles. In 1956 Benjamin Bloom developed learning objectives with an educational committee. The main objective of the committee was to classify learning and educational objectives for teachers and students (Bloom, 1956). This has become know as the Bloom’s Taxonomy of educational objectives and is still used commonly today. There are three domains outlined by Bloom’s Taxonomy of Education, which includes: Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor. The application of these three domains can help manage patients with chronic diseases by helping the nurse understand how to teach material for different learning styles.
The cognitive domain involves the development of intellectual or knowledgeable skill, for example, recalling and recognizing important facts. This is vital in teaching patients information in regard to certain procedures, medications, treatments, or diagnoses. For example, the nurse must make sure the learner comprehends the material taught. For instance, if a nurse were to teach a patient about a certain medication, it is imperative that the patient understands the information being taught. Recognizing the medication associated with a certain disease and signs and symptoms of side effects. The nurse must develop a plan of care that includes application, analysis and evaluation. It is important for the nurse to evaluate the effectiveness of the material that is being taught.
The affective domain (Krathwohl, Bloom, Masia, 1973) includes the manner in which learners deal with things emotionally, such as feelings, values, appreciation, enthusiasms, motivations, and attitudes. This domain is important as well in nursing education. The nurse must be mindful when teaching and dealing with the affective domain. For example, the nurse must assess the
