INT. AUDITORIUM - DAY1973. NANCY——23, pale, thick purple glasses——stands backstage in an auditorium. She swallows and pushes up her glasses, taking a quick look around. People walk back and forth around her, talking amongst themselves inaudibly. She glances around the curtain, eyes wide, seeing a man address the crowd from the stage.INT. living Room - Christmas Eve (Flashback)Nancy, 7 years old, sits impatiently beside a Christmas tree with her hands over her eyes. She wears footie pyjamas. The room is dark, the glow of string lights filling the space, as snow falls out the window. "Blue Christmas" by Elvis Presley plays through the small apartment.Her FATHER——early 20s, scruff, eye bags——sits down in front of her with a present, wearing matching pyjamas.
Nancy notices the rectangular present in her father's hands, and he passes it to her.FATHER(enunciating)Open.Nancy tears open the present, revealing a eyeglass case. Her father smiles as she cracks open the case. Inside are a pair of thick purple glasses——sure to make a statement. INT. bathroom - DAY (Flashback)In a mirror, Nancy plays with the arms of the thick purple glasses, poking at the lenses and holding the frames up to her eyes. Her eyes are magnified, and she drops the glasses in shock. Then, she covers her mouth and laughs. EXT. School parking lot - DAY (Flashback)Nancy is dropped off at elementary school by her father, in a broken down Ford. A banner above the school's doors reads: WELCOME BACK - 1958. He kisses her head and opens the truck door for her.FATHER(enunciating)Bye, baby.Nancy kisses his cheek and hops out of the truck. Students stare at her as she walks, but she is smiling proudly beneath her thick purple glasses. Int. AUDitorium - Day
