Blue Crab Symbols
Artifacts represent people, places, and events and hold a significant meaning to someone. If I was backpacking through a country, my backpack would contain an American flag, a toy Maryland blue crab, and my diploma. The American flag represents not only my love for America but also my unique identity as an American. The blue crab symbolizes the unique culture of Maryland and my connection to the state of Maryland. The diploma is a symbol for not only the senior class but also my second family. The American flag, the Maryland blue crab, and the high school diploma are symbols that represent who I am.
I selected an item that represents America because like the American flag, I am a very diverse person. First, my ancestry is a rich tapestry of

The diploma also displays what year I will graduate in. This shows what class I have been a part of through my entire life. I have been a part of this class since Kindergarten. This group is like my second family. We grew up together playing sports, fishing, swimming, and even vacationing together. I remember being a young child in school and the thought of being one of the “big kids” was so scary. My friends and I never looked forward to middle school; high school had not even crossed our young minds yet. As we grew together, mentally and physically, high school could not come faster. We anxiously awaited our turn as the “top dogs” in middle school just to become the immature and annoying freshman in high school. After years upon years of waiting to become the scary seniors we were finally just that. The senior class has grown together and now we all anxiously await graduation together. We are a family and as a family we will all graduate together. The diploma symbolizes our senior class taking the first step towards our future. The senior class began as a group of small children that grew into a group of educated, young

In the essay “The Uncommon Life of Common Objects” by Akiko Busch she states that objects tell stories more eloquently than people. She gives the example of FBI agents taking an assortment of physical objects from the Staten Island landfill where debris still resides from what used to be the World Trade Center. These FBI agents were at the landfill for months pouring over rubble in order to collect more information as to the happenings of the towers collapse. And during this time they acquired small mementos such as a globe, a paperweight, pieces of metal and concrete, and an American flag. When this incident became public knowledge families of the victims of 9/11 were outraged by this horrific act. These FBI agents were accused at best of removing evidence from a crime scene and at worse grave robbing. The reason why these people felt so strongly about the agents taking these invaluable objects was because they were the last things that their loved ones either saw or touched so it wouldn’t be right for someone who didn’t even know them to have a piece of something that was not rightfully theirs. This argument can be said for Joel Sternfeld’s photograph of Warren Ave which uses it objects to clearly express its message unlike Pepon Osorio’s Badge of Honor.…

In the short story “The Things They Carried,” written by Tim O’Brien, there is a lot of symbolism in each specific object that was mentioned. According to Dictionary.com, a symbolism is the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. A symbol is something used for or regarded as representing something else; a material object representing something, often something immaterial; emblem, token, or sign. The things each soldier carried defined each individual soldier. The story was very detailed in the objects the soldiers carried which tied into the emotional things the soldiers carried.…

Observable “artifacts include the physical signs of an organization 's dominant culture.” (Baack, 2012) This would include but not limited to displays of awards, uniforms, and our social media. Awards that show observable artifacts include our MWR supported of the year and MWR customer service award. These awards include forty hours of annual leave and a plaque displayed for the whole installation to see. This helps for the employees to know that their hard work is being noticed and that they are appreciated. Each facility within the organization has a special uniform they wear in order to distinguish what department they are with. This has become a great help to our customers when we do major events to include all staff. Lastly our social media for our individual departments is an example of observable artifacts. For example, when the aquatic center receives awards, has events, or we do special training we announce these on our Facebook to show the installation what is going on in our own department.…

The text of David McCullough Jr’s high school graduation speech was very agreeable. Most individuals address graduating as a finish line, once it’s reached everything is just done, but David views graduating as a beginning to life. He compares a diploma to a spouse by reciting some of the traditional marriage vows with his own input. If someone can not commit thirteen years of their life for school, how can they expect to commit their whole life to another human being?…

The pictures of the school will show the future people what our school looks like, and will provide some pictures that will be very valuable in the future. We put the Episcopal flag in the time capsule because we are an Episcopal school. We want the flag to be one of the most important things in our time capsule. We also put the American flag in the time capsule because we are proud to be an American school. The icon was done by our incredible art teacher. The American Flag, the purest and most concrete representation of the United States, embodies all that is America. Americans stand, hand over their heart listening to their national anthem, gazing at it with eyes full of love, respect and awe. The American national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner,” was inspired by, and sings in esteem of its resistance, standing among the rockets and bombs bursting in air. It symbolizes truth, liberty and justice. It flies atop the “land of the free and the home of the brave” and is seen almost everywhere in our daily lives. It is even an international icon, the “Stars and Stripes”, “Old Glory”, the American flag. For many this flag has been archetype of the American Dream and patriotism. What better material aspect of our culture is more associated with good ole “’Merica” than the American Flag?…

The ones that I embrace are individualism because what you put into life will make you better than what you are. If you push yourself to do better in life then the overall outcome is huge. Along with this is achievement and success. If you push yourself (individual) then you will have success in life as well. Another one that I embrace is freedom and liberty because without these then you are not restricted to do what you want. If there was not freedom then we would be told what, when and how to do things in life.…

Today, June, 26th, 2012, is the day that we, as a class, are going to graduate the eighth grade. Of course, we all know that. But do we really understand what it all means? The definition of graduation is to complete a class or course of study. That’s it, the original definition of graduating. To me, graduation means more than that. It means growing, it means changing, and it means moving on. Today, the ceremony might seem like it's all happening too fast, or, it might seem like it's never going to end, but all our lives we'll remember it, and that's what counts. My two years of middle school have been a time to remember, I’ve learned a lot during my time in middle school, and these memories are what we are going to remember for the rest of our lives.…

In middle school I remember being told that I will be receiving an award at our ceremony so I had to show up to the ceremony. I did show up and I remember being told to sit down in the front row. I did not think anything of it and was just there to be there. Then I heard them describe an award meant for the top student in that grade level and then they mentioned my name. I was so excited and so proud to show this to my mom and make her proud of what I have earned. It says alot about how much hard work I put in to school and sometimes I do not even realize it. It tells people that school is a priority in my life and it will continue to be one for my future education. This is what started it all for me, it showed me that I should strive for the…

What artifact describes you? Could be your pen, book, iPod etc. as long as you feel that it shows who you are. My laptop describes me in many ways such as the music I download into it. I like rap/hip-hop and R&B, so my laptop has many songs of those categories. As for my pictures, the pictures saved onto it are of either my friends, family or just things I like. They describe who I am and where I come from and the places I have been to. Also I love playing games on my laptop and just exploring the internet. The games describe me as a fun person and exploring the internet would describe me a curious person (and I am).…
