For Bangladesh, the readymade garment export industry has been the proverbial goose that lays the golden eggs for over fifteen years now. The sector now dominates the modern economy in export earnings, secondary impact and employment generated. The events in 1998 serve to highlight the vulnerability of this industry to both internal and external shocks on the demand and supply side. Given the dominance of the sector in the overall modern economy of Bangladesh, this vulnerability should be a matter of some concern to the policymakers in Bangladesh. Although in gross terms the sector’s contributions to the country’s export earnings is around 74 percent, in net terms the share would be much less partially because the backward linkages in textile have been slow to develop. The dependence on a single sector, no matter how resilient or sturdy that sector is, is a matter of policy concern. We believe the policymakers in Bangladesh should work to reduce this dependence by moving quickly to develop the other export industries using the lessons learned from the success of apparel exports. Support for the apparel sector should not be reduced. In fact, another way to reduce the vulnerability is to diversify the product and the market mix. It is heartening to observe that the knit products are rapidly gaining share in overall garment exports as these products are sold in quota-free markets and reflect the strength of Bangladeshi producers in the fully competitive global apparel markets…

At a worldwide stage, the textile market knows different situations. Europe is facing a recession while North American market is struggling. This current trends leads to reduced worldwide sale perspective. In Asia, the situation is more complex. China is the major actor in the market. More and more, price rises in China due to a higher domestic demand and higher wages. This economic trend creates opportunities for other Asian countries to become new sourcing targets (Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia). However, new countries doesn’t have necessary quality and quantity requirement, which put companies in a huge dilemma in 2012 and for years to come……

The garments products of Bangladesh include both knit and woven wear. Share of knitwear in the total production of garment in Bangladesh is steadily increasing over time. At present, knit wear accounts for about 33 percent of the total production. Of the woven wears, high-value products are shirts, jackets, coats, blouses, sportswear and many more casual and fashion apparels. Recent data shows that production of these high value items either decreased over the years or increased at a very nominal rate compared to other basic low value-added items such as trousers or shorts. Thus, product diversification in the Bangladesh garment industry has been rather slow and products are mainly low value-added or low-fashion items. Of all the produced items in 2001-2, around 40 per cent were exported to USA markets and 53 per cent were exported to the EU markets, with Germany being the highest imported or Bangladeshi garments. However, data of 2003-4 shows that exports to EU has increased to 65 per cent, while exports to…

In this era of competition where there is no space for error, efficiency in production plays a great part. Efficiency in all aspects, compassion for gaining advantage is the key for survival and growth. In all trade mania there’s a saying it’s the people who make all the difference in development. Like many third world countries, Bangladesh is a developing country. Its economic development depends firstly on agriculture and secondly on industry based phenomena. The large-scale production of readymade garments (RMG) in organized factories is a new growth item in Bangladesh. Since the late 1970s, the RMG industry started developing in Bangladesh primarily as in export-oriented sector. This sector is also important in other countries such as India, Vietnam, China and lots more. It rapidly attained high importance in terms of employment, foreign exchange earnings and its contribution to GDP in all countries. The concept of social responsibility is a fairly recent one in the business world. Awareness about the social responsibility of business organizations is rapidly on the rise and firms are also accepting this concept. The textile industry is no…

The phenomenal growth of the garment industry in Bangladesh is widely known, due in no small part to the popular book by Easterly (2002) and an earlier paper by Rhee (1990). The industry now ranks among the largest garment exporters in the world. It accounts for 75 percent of the country’s export earnings and 25 percent of GDP and provides ample job opportunities for females. The garment industry started from scratch three decades ago. Since its exports were negligible in those days, the country was not subject to export restrictions under the Multi-Fiber Arrangement (MFA), which attracted the attention of Daewoo Corporation of South Korea, one of the rising garment manufacturers suffering severely from the quota system. The company planned to develop a production base in Bangladesh and teamed up with an indigenous new enterprise called Desh Ltd. in 1979. Desh sent 130 new employees to Daewoo’s factory in South Korea, where they participated in an eight-month intensive training course covering diverse topics from sewing skills to factory management and international marketing. By two years after the training, however, almost all the trainees had left Desh to start their own garment businesses (Rhee, 1990). Easterly (2002, pp.147-148) comments: “This explosion of garment companies started by ex-Desh workers brought Bangladesh its $2 billion in garment sales” in the late 1990s.By 2007/08, the industry was earning more than $10 billion. Like the Bangladesh of three decades ago, countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are now given favorable treatments to their garment industries, such as duty-free, quota-free access to the US market provided by the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).…

In recent time it is argued that the crisis in the Ready Made Garment (RMG) sector is not only limited to the wages and allowances of the workers. Productions and exports of the factories have decreased and the price of the apparels is decreasing in the international market. The owners of this industry allege that, the supply of gas and electricity is not continuous, because of which they are to use generators to keep the production process of the factories uninterrupted, resulting in the increasing cost of productions. But it is urgent to reduce the cost of production to comply with the foreign buyers' demand and the competitive international price. Moreover, serious and untoward incidents in the form of chaos and confusions are frequent in this sector on the basis of rumours and petty demands of the workers. It has become a way of frequently destroying factories by spreading news of misbehaviour of the factory owners with the workers.…

Ready-made garments manufactured in Bangladesh are divided mainly into two broad categories: woven and knit products. Shirts, T-shirts and trousers are the main woven products and undergarments, socks, stockings, T-shirts, sweaters and other casual and soft garments are the main knit products. Woven garment products still dominate the garment export earnings of the country. The share of knit garment products has been increasing since the early 1990s; such products currently account for more than 40 per cent of the country’s total RMG export earnings (BGMEA website). Although various types of garments are manufactured in the country, only a few categories, such as shirts, T-shirts, trousers, jackets and sweaters, constitute the major production-share (BGMEA website; and Nath, 2001). Economies of scale for large-scale production and export-quota holdings in the corresponding categories are the principal reasons for such a narrow product concentration.…
