Blue Ridge Community Hospital Case Study

1. As an administrator of Blue Ridge Community Hospital, I would expect to see an overall increase in the various types of community outreach programs being offered by the hospital. With the primary focus being on diet and exercise; this project would be developed and overseen by various staff members within the hospital. One example of a new outreach program that could be offered is healthy cooking and or making healthy eating choices. These types of programs could be developed for various demographics within the community. The hospital dietitians could visit the local schools and talk to the students about making healthy snack choices, or select healthy foods when packing their lunches. Classes can be developed for individuals that have diabetes, issues with gluten tolerance, or individuals that want to lose weight in general. The options are endless. There may be an overall concern about a decrease in hospital census with integrating community health. The staff may have concerns that if the community’s health improves that there will be a decrease in the need for emergency visits. A specialist may also be concerned about a decrease in their patients over time as well. There may also be an increase in injuries within the community as individuals try to establish their own exercise routines without the proper supervision.

5. Keep communication lines open both with your internal hospital staff and with the outside community. Blue Ridge Community hospital needs to address any concerns that their staff has regarding job stability and how the community health project may or may not affect their current job duties. The hospital needs to be sure to keep the community updated as well and to be sure to make public announcements when new services are available to the community to participate in.
