Metonymies are used in very often in literature, and also in everyday speech. A metonymy is a word or phrase that is used to stand in for another word. metonymy is often chosen because it is a wellknown characteristic of the word.
In this example, metonymy is applied because the pen isn’t the thing that is mighty over the sword; it’s the written words being mighty over the violence and destruction, and force. For example, the word "pen" is not always standing in for the written word; often, it just refers to the physical object of a pen.
Metaphor
The definition of a metaphor is "a figure of speech containing an implied comparison, in which a word or phrase ordinarily and primarily used of one thing is applied to."
A metaphor is different to a simile, but it is related, which is also a comparison. The primary difference is that a simile uses the word like or as to compare two things, but a metaphor suggests that the dissimilar things are the same. This picture is funny because it’s a play on a very well know metaphor of ‘being stabbed in the back,’ it’s a joke because in this picture its literally happened. this picture also uses intertextuality, because if you hadn’t of heard of the metaphor, ‘stabbed in the back,’ you wouldn’t understand the joke.
