something different. The instruments that Marley played were the guitar and percussion, but is known for his deep and meaningful lyrics that was put into a song that he created. In 1963 Marley started out in a group called the wailers. During Bob Marley time in the group he created and crafted his vocal style that would be able to reach the hearts of people around the world, and went to produce some of the earliest reggae records to be produced by Lee Perry. The wailers disbanded in 1974 not long after releasing their record; during that time Bob Marley started to seek out his solo career. During is Marley relocated to England for the release of his album Exodus in 1977 which was a hit worldwide, creating a good reputation. Bob Marley became the world’s best-selling artist by selling more than 75 millions of copies. Exodus was on the British top album charts for months with his four singles: Exodus, waiting in Vain, Jamming, and One Love. Bob Marley lyrics were deep and meaningful, and got rid some of the stereotypes that surrounded that Caribbean and Africa. The stereotype that in Africa this is nothing, but violence and starving children was pushed aside by Bob Marley showing love and compassion in most of his song. He showed the world that Africa and the Caribbean are beautiful places that do face problems that every countries has, proving that not everyone is different from each other. During the late 1970’s when Bob Marley music was thriving, and was considered the father of modern reggae, Marley was diagnosed with a type of malignant melanoma under the nail of his toe, which was a symptom of an existing cancer he had. Marley turned down doctors, due to his religious beliefs, and instead removed the nail bed and continued his touring in the 1980’s. Bob Marley last concert at Stanley Theater in September on 1980. Marley health decreased as the cancer had spread throughout his whole body, as Marley sought out treatment, but was not successful. During his journey in Germany to Jamaica his condition worsened and called medical attention in Miami Florida where ultimately Marley passed away on May 11th 1981 at the age of 36. Marley life was cut short by cancer, but he brought new ideas to different parts of the older, and brought along many Rastafari traditions.
Rastafarian from a religious point of view was a modern religion that name came from the late King Halie Selassie, who birth given name was Ras Jafari. Selassie was regarded to as the black messiah. A prophecy was made by a well-known political leader Marcus Garvey. Selassie was believed to be the savior from white suppressors, and reunite all people of African descendants back to Africa. There were other leaders that had a great impact on the development of Rastafarian ideology, one of these leaders name was Leonard P. Howell who made a great impact to the movement in 1930. Howell served in the third Ashanti War between England, and Ghana in 1901. During this time Howell preached about Selassie would gain power, and superiority over the ones who oppressed them. Rastafarians religion and Christianity may seem similar, and can be simply put into the same category by those who do not understand the difference.
Looking for similarities these are between Christianity and Rastafarian is taking a deeper look into the belief systems. Rastafarians believe in a Judeo-Christian in God who they call Jah. Jah or Jah Jah is short for what is believed to be the proper name for God pf Israel in the Hebrew Bible, and is seen in the praise or saying Hallelujah, and is known in English context associated with Rastafari. They believe their savior is King Halie Selassie while in Christianity it is believed that Jesus is their savor and God is their salvation. In a traditional Christian belief it is believed that there are two almighty or all powerful that is after God himself, that are Jesus, and the Holy Spirt. It is said that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirt are the same person, and not at the same time, as the actions that each play are different, but are all God to put into simple terms.
Rastafari believe that only Halie Selassie is an incarnation of God, and he was praised in the same aspect as a second coming of Jesus Christ or Yeshua. Rastafari can trace some of its origin back to Ethiopian culture, as well as Christian beliefs. Rastafari accepts many concepts in the bible, but believe that many messages are misinterpreted and turned into a corrupt by those who preached about the rights of oppression, and slavery. A line is created between Christian beliefs that are interpretations by its reader and Rastafari interpretations that created what is called the black man’s bible. There may be many similarities that connects these two religions together, but there are disagreements on how the bible should be interrupted, with Rastafari religion there is more than just but also a way of life.
Every culture has their own traditions and process of how they celebrate and live daily life. Rastafari way of life is surrounded by food, music, religion, and environment. The way that Rastafarians live is not just for fun, or to romance the culture to look perfect but their culture was formed for survival, of their group against being oppressed since the 1910’s before Halie Selassie was in power. Food is vital to human’s survival which in different locations there will be different rituals, and traditions that comes with availability of food that Is easy to come by in that region of the world. The way most Rastafarian diet is called Ital that is based on the spiritual belief and interpretations from the bible like: Genesis, Leviticus and Deuteronomy that says that the body is to be kept clean and pure. A way that Rastafarians keep their body clean is by reframing from digesting animal products, and to only eat food that is fresh, local or in season. The Ital diet is focused on consuming fruits, vegetables, grains, beans. This lifestyle of eating may seem bland, but with inspirations for ital dishes based off of Indian and African cooking with fruits like coconuts, bananas, pimento can change to perspective of a meal. Sometimes these foods are not in season and don’t come to certain areas, and is not organic, so not every Rastafarian eats just those fruits and vegetables. For the Rastafarians who are less strict choose to eat fish. Rastafarians that choose to eat fish must not be less than twelve inches because a fish larger than twelve inches is symbolic of the Babylonians who fed off of others. Babylonians are ancient Akkadian group who lived in southern Mesopotamia now known as Iraq showed no mercy in the past for animals or themselves, and by the gospel they cannot kill something that is fearful. Food is a huge part of culture, and so is the way someone dresses is a huge sign of how they live and want to be seen by peers, and outsiders.
Rastafarian clothing style is modest and is made from natural fibers, and nothing made from animals skin involved. Some Rastafarians wear long dresses or traditional African-style outfits to symbolize the African roots of their tradition, and they also use medallions of Ras Tafari the lion that is the Ethiopian throne. Some Rastafari have restrictive dress codes that doesn’t allow shorts or to show bear backs and discourage anyone from having tattoos. For ceremonies or events Rastafarians dress in whit, but everyday life is colorful clothes, and the traditional colors are: red, gold, green and black are the colors of Ethiopian flag. Rastafari also wear the colors of the Jamaican flag that are gold, green, and black. The gold is to symbolize faith sunshine and prosperity; Green symbolic for land and what nature produces; black symbolizing the African decedents or their people. Digging deeper into what being Rastafarian there are other factors to take into account around.
Gender roles within Rastafarian cultures is similar in modern times as women are generalized as the caretakers, but will work if the family needs money to provide the lifestyle that they have chosen.
Men in this context are seen as the providers and the protectors. There are some similarities with women being more accepted for begin modest, but wearing beautiful, and colorful clothes and long dreads to attract attention of male. In the story of Adam and Eve woman are seen as giving into temptation when Eve took a bite from the apple as a result many cultures choose to be attracted to women who are modest in most cultures. This is extremely different from how moderated America works, and is breaking away from the cultural norms of being modest, but looking for a form of comfortability. Many Rastafarian woman see nothing with the way they dress, and love the connection they have with their people and how they are raised. Rastafarians and sexuality preference is the same as Christianity the belief that a man and a women should be together. Most Rastafarians will not judge someone lifestyle or choices based off of someone sexual preference, some Rastafarians do strongly believe in bible , and most of their religion is solely based off the bible, but is modified to fit their own beliefs with the “black man’s bible” that was created just for
Rastafarians.
