Body Of Work Lup Fiasco Analysis
Body of Work by Lupe Fiasco. Typically, a body of work is a collection of everything an artist, writer or musician has created. The song features; Saxophone solos played by Terrance Martin, Troi singing the pre-hook and hook, Lupe Fiasco slow raping the verses, and a women whispering as backup during the verses. There is a slow and softer beat throughout the song. On the surface the song seems to be about Fiasco’s relationship with rap music, but there is a far more universal message hidden as well.
In the first verse Fiasco raps, “This is foretold, Bojangles was tapping in Morse code” Bojangles is a famous tap dancer, he played Shirley Temple’s butler on her show. He filled a stereotypical on the show as a black servant but the line “At least

Thermal imaging is among the many tools that law enforcement uses to catch criminals growing marijuana illegally. For a man with the initials DLK, federal agents used thermal imaging to identify a heat pattern mirroring one of a marijuana growing room. After gathering this evidence, the agents obtained a search warrant and arrested DLK after finding a growing room in his home with 100 marijuana plants. However, DLK has raised the constitutional question on whether the thermal imaging scans needed a warrant and if they violated his fourth amendment rights. Based on evidence from Documents A, B, C, E and F, the government did not exceed their authority. The scan did not invade DLK’s privacy, the heat emitted was into a public space, and there was probable cause to prompt the use of the imager to collect information prior to a…

Webster’s Dictionary defines a Minstrel as “any of a troupe of performers typically giving a program of black American melodies, jokes, and impersonations and usually wearing blackface,”[i] Thomas D. Rice is believed to be the first Minstrelsy in blackface. Rice modeled his minstrel after an older disfigured black man entertaining himself with song and dance wearing unkempt clothing. His most popular minstrel was “Jump Jim Crow.” "Jump Jim Crow" became the first popular minstrel song, but in reality it was a mockery of African Americans and an exploitation of their culture. Unlike Rice’s sole contribution to the origins of the minstrel show, Hip Hop has had many contributors: DJ Kool Herc, Keith ”Cowboy” Wiggins, Grandmaster Flash and the Fabulous Five, Chuck D and Public Enemy, and Run DMC are some of the most remarkable contributors. These men are most remarkable because at the rise of the Hip Hop movement, Hip Hop was not centered around violence, drugs, weapons, and sex as people like to think. It was just mere entertainment or a political message with songs like “Rappers Delight” (see Figure 1) and “Fight the Power.” (see Figure 2)…

Simple uses slang and a broken English dialect to help the unnamed narrator convey a greater sense of Be-Bop and how it relates to racial issues. In this two person dialogue between Simple and the unnamed narrator, the setting of their conversation is being held in an urban setting. Simple uses this urban setting to his advantage by speaking freely using slang and a broken English dialect knowing that the unnamed narrator would understand. In order to transfer the point to the unnamed narrator, Simple uses a type of language which they are both familiar with. Simple’s point is that Re-Bop and Be-Bop are not the same. The composure of the dialogue allows for Hughes to use Simple to broadly convey his thoughts to the unnamed narrator or his audience through a casual manner.…

“Ready Or Not”, by the Fugees, is another example of a hip hop song that exposes the harsh realities of the ghettos, as it paints a vivid picture of the struggles they face. The song can get very dark and depressing, but sadly this is as a result of the fact that it is describing the life of impoverished, racialized minorities, attempting to survive in such an unfair and unjust world. The lyrics enlighten the listener and teach society that life is not always as easy and simple as it may seem. Things can get very complicated for particular individuals, especially those living in the ghettos. This song brings awareness concerning people living within such environments, in hopes that there will be further support towards social change.…

He states a descriptive three step process which demonstrates how singing the blues “doesn’t reaffirm the brutal experience; it reaffirms the value of life” (Sanchez 7). The blues genre is said to be about seeking the energy and strength to keep going. The lyrics in the song “The Message” are tied to the reality of surviving in a society made dangerous for all black citizens. The process affirming that a song can be categorized as blues music consists of “(1) fingering the jagged grain of your brutal experience; (2) finding a near-tragic, near-comic voice to express that experience; and (3) reaffirming your existence” (Sanchez 6). By creating this song, artist Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five are a near-tragic voice that have experienced the harsh life in the ghetto, and can be accurately heard reaffirming their existence. “The Message” ultimately portrays that the content of rap music is much deeper and more real than the party-themed subject matter other artists of the 1980s…

Having already established the need for liberation, many of the remaining songs come in the form of suggestions by dead prez on steps to be taken towards this end. In “Mind Sex,” dead prez offers an alternative to the misogynistic view of women perpetuated in mainstream hip hop. Rather than viewing women merely as sexual objects, “Mind Sex” asserts that true beauty resides in intellectual and emotional attraction and that men should form an appreciation for women as a whole person before pursuing sex. The first verse highlights this idea, saying “See, I aint got to get in your blouse/ It’s your eye contact that be getting me aroused/…
