One reason for why Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is sane, is that his madness only manifests itself when he is in the presence of selective characters. Hamlet even says himself that he is only "mad in craft" [Shakespeare III.iv.188-199]. Hidden amongst the associates in question, exists his cowardly uncle, Claudius--the man responsible for the death of Hamlet’s father and Gertrude, his unfaithful mother, who married Claudius. Hamlet’s “insane” facade is also shown to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two of Hamlet's school friends who follow every order given by King Claudius. He tells Horatio that he is going to "feign madness," and that if he sees any strange behavior, he should not worry, for it is only an act [I.V.166-180] . This shows us that he is only following protocols directed by his father's ghost who told him that he should avenge his father's death by killing Claudius. To make it subtle and unexpected, Hamlet acts mad to make it seem he would be the last person to want to kill Claudius, for he was out of his mind and was not thinking straight to think of anyone but himself. Some of the characters themselves come to realize that Hamlet is not mad. Claudius confesses that Hamlet's "actions although strange, do not appear to stem from madness." [III.i.165-169]. Polonius too admits that Hamlet's actions and words have a certain "method" to them [II.II.206-207]. Although Hamlet has had social withdrawal, which is the state of being solitary or secluded from family members and society(MHA, Mental Illness and the Family: Recognizing Warning Signs and How to Cope) because of the time he has been spending alone with himself, does not mean that he is suffering from depression or any mental illness.
