Since its inception in the 1970s, The Body Shop has experienced phenomenal growth. Specifically, revenue was growing at a rate of more than 20% per year. In the 1990s, the previously experienced revenue growth began to decline rapidly. There were numerous reasons for the steady decline in revenue growth. The two most important of these were a loss of brand image and severe competition from other skin and hair-care companies. The Body Shop expanded too quickly to maintain its previous level of profitability and traditionally recognized brand image. Even after Roddick, the founder and chief executive officer stepped down in 1998 The Body Shop continued to have problems. While revenue began to grow, pretax profit was declining and a new strategy emerged. “The strategy consisted of three principal objectives: to enhance The Body Shop Brand through a focused product strategy and increased investment in stores; to achieve operational efficiencies in our supply chain by reducing product and inventory costs; and to reinforce our stakeholder culture” (Shank and Vaccaro 120). A forecast was produced to evaluate the success of this strategy.…

The Body Shop International plc, known as The Body Shop, has 2,500 stores in 61 countries. Founded in 1976 by the late British environmental and human rights campaigner Dame Anita Roddick, The Body Shop started life as a small outfit in Brighton selling just 25 products. Customers were encouraged to recycle packaging (partly because Roddick didn't have enough bottles at first) and there was a real emphasis on natural ingredients that were ethically sourced and cruelty-free. Now the range consists of over 300 products and there are more than 2500 stores in over 60 markets worldwide. The Body Shop’s range of beauty products consist of skin care, make-ups, fragrance and hair care that caters to both men and women.…

We can also assess performance in terms of both quantitative measures (financial and strategic achievements against budget, plans, etc.) and look to see if its performance is above or below the industry average. We can also look at qualitative measures (such as brand awareness /status, consumer attitudes to the company, and so on). There is only limited information in the case regarding some of these areas, but I will attempt to look first at the strategy followed by Body Shop, then at the financial ratios based on its figures, non-financial measures and then finally draw conclusions that attempt to answer the question.…
