David Malouf’s revision of Homer’s famous Iliad, Ransom, explores the conventional stereotype of the hero and questions the traditional idea of courage. Malouf challenges the ancient Greek understanding of heroism, which was primarily centered on prowess, power and confidence. He questions this characterization and suggests that celebrating a hero who is dehumanized by the rage and violence of war is unwise. Malouf shows that there are greater acts of courage than those achieved in battle. He argues that it takes great courage to break free of convention and expectation.…

    Heroism In The Odyssey

Movies, which show more and tell less, allow potential heroes to prove their heroism with actions and not words. Each movie that we watched for class showed heroism in a different way, much like the ancient Greek and Roman poems told about heroism in a different way. Partially a product of their time, each movie approached a World War in a way that reflected the values of their time, much like how Odysseus’s cunning was praised by the Greeks and condemned by the Romans. However, I think that the sequence of movies matches up quite nicely with the sequence of poems. Comparing The Grand Illusion to the Iliad, Saving Private Ryan to the Aeneid, and Inglourious Basterds to the Odyssey brings out contrasts, like the definition of heroism, between…

However, many people will argue that what we do have are attenuated heroes who manifest heroic tendencies that reflect our own fragmented and hero-less society. Humans lead an existence that is influenced by stories and the lasting legends of mythological heroes. The deeds of heroes have proven to be vital to humanity’s efforts to rebuild social values and develop civilization. Heroes motivate subsequent generations, and also personify our ideals. For instance, there is a public monument located in Postman’s Park in the city of London, named the Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice, to commemorate ordinary people who died saving the lives of others and might otherwise have been forgotten. The tablets on the Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice are memorable and evocative examples of how heroes and their spirits can survive within the infrastructure of our modern life. Heroism forms part of the necessary foundation of a country’s ideological life, and Brooks emphasizes different kinds of heroes in World War Z to represent how the personal character and behaviour of heroes, especially a belief in courage and self-sacrifice, inspires individuals and nations.…
