Revelations
The book spans three literary genres, the epistolary, the apocalyptic, and the prophetic. It has been said that “The Book of Revelation is the greatest book of apocalyptic literature ever written” (Hindson, E & Towns, E 2013. Pg555). The author of the Book of Revelation has been disputed over the years, however it is believed that the authorship of the Book of Revelation belongs to the apostle John. Also, the date of when the book was actually written has been widely disputed. Today most scholars date the book of Revelation to late in the first century, around A.D. 96. However, there is reason to believe it was much …show more content…
earlier than this time. In Revelation 11, John writes: Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told: “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample over the holy city for forty-two months” [Rev. 11:1-2]. Although Revelation sometimes talks about God’s temple in heaven, it’s clear that here it’s talking about the temple in Jerusalem. Nobody worshipped at the temple after the summer of A.D. 70, because that’s when the Romans destroyed it.This tells us that Revelation was written before the summer of A.D. 70("When Was the Book of Revelation Written?", 2014) . Key themes and purposes of The Book of Revelation outlines the return of Jesus Christ through a series of visions. The main characters of The Book of Revelation are the churches, John and Jesus Christ.
Person: Mary
Mary the virgin mother of Jesus Christ was born approximately 18 BC to Joachim and Anne, and died in 41 AD. Mary was born in the nation of Galilee, and after that she gave birth to Jesus in the holy city of Bethlehem. Revelation 12:1,5 (RSV) And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; . . . She brought forth a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne . . . . . The first level of "proof" would be the literal interpretation of the text itself, in which we see that this Woman gives birth to a Son, Whom the Dragon wishes to destroy. All commentators agree that the Son if Jesus Christ--and the Dragon is explicitly identified as Satan--therefore it is absolutely reasonable to assume that the Woman who gave birth to Jesus Christ MUST BE Mary, the Mother of our Lord. ("Biblical Evidence for Catholicism: The Blessed Virgin Mary as the Woman of Revelation 12: According to Popes and Catholic Scholars").
Setting: Nazareth
Nazareth was said to be continuously settled between 900-600 BC, with a population that did not reach over 500 in the time of Jesus Christ.
Situated inside a bowl atop Nazareth ridge north of the Jezreel valley, Nazareth was a relatively isolated village in the time of Jesus with a population less than two hundred. Today Nazareth is home to more than 60,000 Israeli Arabs, and Upper Nazareth is home to thousands more Jewish residents. The city of Nazareth is most famous for it being the birthplace of Jesus Christ (Nazareth-isreal.com). A Byzantine church was built over the place where it is believed that the angel Gabriel announced the birth of Jesus to the virgin Mary. In 1966 the Roman Catholic Church began constructing a new basilica over these remains and today this church is the largest church building in the Middle East (Bibleplaces.com). Nazareth is the not only the place of Jesus Christ birth, but also where he spent his early childhood until early adult life. He left at the age of 30 and tried to return to teach in the synagogue twice after, however he was rejected both times. The locals were so ourages, that the even tried to throw Jesus off of a cliff to his death upon his
return.
