Book or Computer
What will happen to books? Will they disappear? If yes what will appear instead of books?
To be a success at school an ordinary student has to do a lot of things: find information about something or somebody; find the word definitions; read different maps; read classics for literature lessons, etc. A few years ago people should go to the library and work with encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, books. They did a tremendous work
Now we can surf the Internet and without leaving our homes we can find information in
Wikipedia, Google Earth, and even read books on-line. From year to year it becomes easier to get the information we need.
We have asked students from Moscow and the USA where they get information. Most of them find it with the help of the computer. In our school we have asked 106 students in the 9th, 10th
,
and 11th grades. 64% of them find information in books. But at the same time we found out that our students read less. There are 680 students in our school, 457 of them take books in our local library, and 337 students visit our school library.
What is a computer? Are computers friends or foes? At the start of new millennium, technological and educational advances are reaching extremes. As everything becomes more complex, the way we work out problems and find the solutions is becoming easier. With the help of computers we have an access to the best libraries in the world, an access to a huge database.
Computers reduce the time we spend on looking for information.
However, students who rely on computers to do all their work are being cheated out of mind-expanding experience. Students still need to be forced to use their own brains for some things.
Here what our students think:“I’m for computerized education. Some people think that students should learn to use their own brains. I find it humorous that parents and teachers call for a limit on access to computers for school children.” (Vanya)
”We are against computerized education.

As of the 21st century, technological use has become so readily available to people that it's inevitable. It is a part of society's trends, and has been implemented throughout schools across the nation. For example, schools have adopted the use of calculators, even though there was a upheaval about calculators in the early 1870s, as depicted in the article, "Legalized Cheating" The Wall Street Journal (2006): Print by Ellen Gamerman. Calculators were a very controversial device in the classroom due the fact that it can spit out an answer, leading to the notion that students would be inadequate because they wouldn't be able to think for themselves. Also, when teachers issue a project, for the most part, we have moved away from the tri-folds, poster boards, or foldables. Now, we are using the newer technology like prezi or glogster, to…

With technology becoming more prevalent in this day and age, it has become an increasing trend to see students using their laptops in class. While there are professors who ban the use of laptops in their class, believing that it is a form of distraction to the students, others support the use of laptops in class. This includes Rebecca Schuman, a journalist and education columnist for Slate. Her article “In Defense of Laptops in the Classroom ” was published on 15 June 2014, on Slate’s online portal. Schuman aims to persuade the readers that laptops should be allowed in classrooms as she feels that it is essential.…

Not a lot of students enjoy the readings because they cannot relate to the stories. We are given books that may have been popular in the 20th century, but mind numbing in the 21st century. In “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read”, by Francine Prose, she shares her opinions on the books that are currently being read at school and how they are being taught. Francine states that “high school is where literary tastes and allegiance are formed; what we read in adolescence is imprinted on our brains as the dreamy notions of childhood crystallize into hard data” (pg. 90) The texts we read in high school are not challenging enough.…

In the letter “Are Computers Compromising Education?”, A. Jones, the principal of Hightower College, explains his reasons for banning the use of computers in classrooms, informing parents of the many issues that it would have imposed on students. Jones addresses the issue in a very reasoned but concerned tone, which gradually becomes more assertive as he attempts to completely convince parents to agree with his contention, that Australia’s “computer-based ‘education revolution’ represents a false promise to the Australian public”, as it inflicts a variety of health hazards on students and is preventing them from learning “the essential social and intellectual skills that they need…

Indulged in the Internet world and not willing to read is the main reason that we are the dumbest generation. Although there are so many information online, we don’t even have the thirst for browsing it. Although there are good libraries and all kinds of policies that encourage students to read, we don’t read out of voluntary. This is the problem that couldn’t be easy to improve, and constantly makes our generation…

Did you know that more than half of the world’s students are using tablet computers? To all the students out there who are not lucky enough to even use a computer (at home or at school), I am deeply sorry for you since half of the people that are at the same age as you are surrounded by information, and are improving their knowledge of the world everyday. No worries! After this speech you will have all the rights to go against who ever would not let your school have laptops/computers. "How is it possible to convince my headmaster to let us have computers in school?” A Chinese proverb once said: “Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in a different time.” It clearly states how the minds of the elders and the juniors are so different since they were born in different times or even centuries. Would you rather listen to a person who has a mind to create more possibilities and not stick to the old rules or a person who sticks any same old rules that their elders once told them and rule the school? I bet you most people would choose a person who creates more possibilities than an old man who sticks to the rules and not let the school have technology. I mean, what is the point of a school, which only has books and pencils, and never interact with visual presentations; it would make the students lives in to hell! When they grow up, what job would require them to only write in books and pencils? If your child does not know anything about technology, what can they even be when they grow up? Nothing is my answer to that. You might say an architect, but sadly, they do use computers too, since after they finish the planning and design of the building, they would have to scan it on a computer and send it out to the managers. Our lives depend on technology and computers. Kids in school used to write on paper and read out of books But the fact is, more and more kids in school…

Some people may argue that when using technology students will break the rules and not do what the devices are meant to be doing. Students are responsible enough to be trusted to do the work they are assigned, with the assistance of an electronic device. The schools that do believe in using technology to assist students, put rules in place to discipline students doing the wrong thing. If a child decides to break the rules then they will miss out on an education, so if they get a bad mark it will be their own fault for using their resources incorrectly. Students marks reflect on the way they used the technology, so they're effectively deciding what grade they receive by the way they use their device.…

While Richtel stated that schools shouldn’t rush into using technology so soon, but should have educators focus more on teaching students the old fashioned way, including pen and paper; Sweeney wrote about how it is beneficial to students that they do use technology since they are already used to the different programs out there. Many people think that technology in the classroom is a great way for students to succeed, but technology can hinder a student’s work ethic and they can become lazy.…

Not many students in high school pick up a book and simply read for enjoyment, Why not though? Most students my age are busy with sports, homework, and their jobs. Not only do we not have time to be entertained by a novel, some choose not to because they think books aren’t amusing to read. This is due to horrific experiences with this subject. In addition, not many students think well of reading. As a below average reading student, without extra help as a new reader at 4 years old, caused me to have horrible reading habits and experiences, permanent hardships and complete avoidance of reading which left me with the lack of reading capabilities that others maintained already.…
