As the book opens, Hazel is being forced to go to a support group for cancer patients because her mother thinks she depressed, but Hazel just doesn’t want to go. She made up her mind that “America’s Next Top Model” helps her deal with her so called “Depression”, but her mother still pushes her to go anyway. Hazel made the right choice by going because she meets this hot boy named, Augustus Waters. Augustus suddenly caught her attention.
As the story progresses, Augustus and Hazel get closer and close and they both realize how much they both mean to each other. Hazel and Augusta really started to bond and make a special connection neither one of them never had with anyone else. Hazel felt like Augustus was her new best friend that she could trust besides their friend Isaac(who just lost his other eye and is now blind) and her parents. Augustus really wanted Hazel to feel loved so he used his Genie Foundation Wish, a organization that helps cancer patients wishes comes true, to take her to Amsterdam to meet Peter Van Houten.
